I was wrapping up an Offsiter research trip to Oaxaca, Mexico and needed to take a short flight to make my connection home. It was easy to find the AeroVega check-in desk at the small airport, and I was greeted casually by an older gentleman in a crisp white dress shirt. He cooly checked my ticket, passport, and baggage weight, and nodded towards a small waiting area.
After ~10 minutes or so, he appeared quietly with a clipboard, wearing a high-visibility safety vest and ground crew ear protection. He double checked my info like we had never met, and did the same for the women seated across from me. He gestured for us to follow him through the doors, and we walked together out onto the tarmac.
Even when we got right up to the plane it was much smaller than I expected. The gentleman motioned for our bags, and quickly disappeared around the side of the plane to stow them.
Just as I start to wonder where the pilot is, the man comes full circle around the small plane. Only he’s replaced the high-visibility vest and ear guards with a leather flight jacket, and captain's hat!
He casually invites us to board with a gesture and facial expression that combined ‘yea, i just pulled that off’ with ‘this is your last chance to bail out while we’re still on the ground’.
Neither of us took the opportunity, and we squeezed into the small back seat directly behind the now pilot. He pointed at the headsets, and we put them as he clicked over the airwaves and said with the most practiced smile...
“Welcome to AeroVega, this is Captain Vega speaking. Sit back and enjoy the ride”
