💎 Hidden Gem of the Week

The Man Who Walked Across America... Then Built One of Los Angeles' Most Incredible Homes

Hidden away in Highland Park sits one of Los Angeles' most fascinating homes...

Yet most visitors have never even heard of it.

Before there was Hollywood glamour, there was Charles Fletcher Lummis—one of the city's greatest adventurers.

In 1885, Lummis walked over 3,500 miles from Cincinnati to Los Angeles in just 143 days to begin a job as the first city editor of the Los Angeles Times. Along the way, he mailed newspaper articles documenting his incredible journey, making him something of an early travel writer.

A few years later, he decided to build his dream home...

By hand.

Over the next 13 years, Lummis gathered river rocks from the nearby Arroyo Seco and constructed this remarkable stone house himself, naming it El Alisal, meaning "The Alder Grove."

The result is unlike anything else in Los Angeles—a rustic home that feels part medieval castle, part Southwestern hacienda, and completely one of a kind.

But El Alisal wasn't just a home...

It became one of Los Angeles' first cultural gathering places, welcoming famous guests including John Muir, Will Rogers, Clarence Darrow, and John Philip Sousa for evenings of music, conversation, and celebration that Lummis simply called "Noises."

🤯 Did You Know?

Hollywood Boulevard Wasn't Always Called Hollywood Boulevard

Long before it became the most famous street in the world...

It was a residential street known as Prospect Avenue.

Back in 1899, Prospect Avenue was nothing more than a dusty country road winding through the Cahuenga Valley. Hollywood itself was a tiny community of just 500 residents, surrounded by citrus groves, barley fields, and Victorian homes.

But the town's founders had a bold vision—they wanted Hollywood to become an important destination.

Their first priority?

🚋 Bringing the railway to Hollywood.

Local landowners, including Peter Beveridge, H. J. Whitley, and Griffith J. Griffith, offered the Los Angeles Pacific Railway a $15,000 incentive to extend its electric trolley line down the middle of Prospect Avenue.

It worked.

On December 15, 1899, construction began, and just five months later, the first electric railcar arrived.

With the railway in place, Hollywood's leaders turned their attention to the road itself.

A 20-foot-wide dirt carriage road was transformed into a magnificent 100-foot-wide boulevard, surfaced with granite gravel and macadam and stretching from Western Avenue to Laurel Canyon Boulevard.

The new boulevard, complete with an electric railway running down its center, announced that Hollywood was no longer a sleepy farming village—it was becoming one of Southern California's most exciting new communities.

Then, just a few years later...

Prospect Avenue received a new name: Hollywood Boulevard.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Today, that same boulevard is home to:

🎭 The Dolby Theatre and the Academy Awards

🌴 Millions of visitors from around the world every year.

It's incredible to think that one of the world's most famous streets began as nothing more than a dusty country lane.

5 Tourist Traps to Avoid on Hollywood Boulevard

Hollywood Boulevard is absolutely worth visiting...

But there are a few things you should be aware of before spending hard earned money on experiences that might not give the best memories.

🎭 1️⃣ Costumed Characters

Mickey, Spider-Man, Marilyn Monroe, and dozens of other characters roam Hollywood Boulevard offering photos.

They're not official performers, and while the photo may seem free, they always insist on a tip afterwards. Claiming its $30 or more for a photo. Trust me its not worth it.

💡 Instead: Enjoy your photo opportunity at a Theme Park such as Disneyland or Universal Studios.

🚌 2️⃣ Celebrity Homes Van Tours

Many of these tours promise you'll see celebrity mansions...

In reality, you'll usually drive past tall hedges, security gates, and houses where celebrities may not have lived for years.

💡 Instead: Visit Greystone Mansion to go beyond the gates and hedges and see what an actual Beverly Hills Mansion actually looks like. And its completely FREE

💿 3️⃣ People Handing Out "Free" CDs

If someone tries to hand you a CD, bracelet, or other "free" item...

Keep walking.

Once you take it, they often pressure you into making a donation or purchasing it.

A polite "No thank you" and continuing to walk is the easiest way to avoid an uncomfortable situation.

🎁 4️⃣ Souvenir Shops

Many Hollywood Boulevard souvenir stores sell the exact same products you'll find elsewhere—but often at much higher prices.

💡 Instead: Consider buying souvenirs at the Original Farmers Market, a CVS or Venice Broadwalk for a more unique keepsake

🚍 5️⃣ Hop-On Hop-Off Buses

They seem convenient for some travelers, but they're not always the best use of your time.

Los Angeles is incredibly spread out, and much of your day can end up being spent sitting in traffic instead of exploring.

💡 Instead: If you're only visiting a few neighborhoods, you'll often save both time and money by using rideshare services or planning your sightseeing by area.

🏰 Disney Sunday

L.A. is full of incredible Disney Gems, but one of my favorite is restaurant where you can still dine at the same table where Walt Disney and his original team of animators gathered for lunch.

Opened in 1922, this charming Scottish-style restaurant quickly became a favorite of Walt Disney after his Hyperion Studio opened just a few miles away.

Stepping through the front door feels like you've been transported into a medieval castle. From the stone walls and massive wooden beams to the cozy fireplaces and old-world décor, it's easy to see how this storybook setting may have helped inspire the magical worlds Disney would later create.

In fact, Walt and his animators ate here so often that they jokingly referred to it as "The Disney Studio Commissary." It was around these tables that some of Disney's earliest ideas were discussed while the studio was creating classics like Steamboat Willie, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and many of the films that would forever change animation.

✨ Don't Miss

🎨 Before you're seated, spend a few minutes exploring the lobby. You'll find historic photographs of Walt Disney at the restaurant, along with original artwork created by legendary Disney Imagineer John Hench, signed by Walt Disney in 1958, and newer Imagineering artwork celebrating the restaurant's century-long connection with Disney.

🪑 Reservations are recommended if you hope to dine there, ask to see Table 31—Walt Disney's favorite table when making the reservations. Once seated look closely at the tabletop and you'll discover sketches and etchings left behind by Disney artists and Imagineers over the years, making it one of the most unique pieces of Disney history you can still experience today.

💡 Local Tip: If you're exploring Griffith Park, Los Feliz, or Hollywood, this is the perfect place to stop for lunch or dinner. The atmosphere alone makes it worth the visit—even if you're not a Disney fan.

🌎 Beyond L.A.: Santa Barbara

Los Angeles is incredible...

But one of the best parts about visiting Southern California is that some amazing destinations are just a short drive away.

Today we're heading about 95 miles north to what many call The American Riviera.

Here's how I'd spend the perfect day in Santa Barbara.

🚗 1. Hit the Road Early

Leave Los Angeles around 8:00 AM.

The drive along the Pacific Coast and Highway 101 is part of the experience, with beautiful coastal scenery along the way.

🥐 2. Breakfast on State Street

Start your morning with authentic French pastries, fresh coffee, or one of their famous almond croissants.

🌴 3. Stroll State Street

Santa Barbara's charming downtown is filled with Spanish Colonial architecture, boutique shops, wine tasting rooms, outdoor cafés, and colorful courtyards.

Take your time—you'll quickly understand why people fall in love with this city.

⛪ 4. Visit the Santa Barbara County Courthouse

📍 1100 Anacapa St.

One of California's most beautiful public buildings—and it's free.

Explore the halls with incredible architecture, see the mural room on the 2nd floor. Then take the elevator or stairs to the clock tower for one of the best panoramic views of Santa Barbara, the mountains, and the Pacific Ocean.

Don't miss the sunken Gardens and the breathtaking facade and entrance of the Courthouse.

🌺 5. Explore the Old Mission Santa Barbara

📍 2201 Laguna St.

Known as the "Queen of the Missions," this historic landmark has been welcoming visitors since 1786.

The beautiful gardens and mountain backdrop make it one of California's most photographed missions.

🧺 6. Picnic or Lunch At Stearns Wharf

California's oldest working wooden wharf is filled with ocean views, small shops, and plenty of places to stop for lunch or ice cream.

🏖️ 7. Enjoy the Waterfront

Head toward Stearns Wharf and the beautiful beaches surrounding the harbor.

Grab lunch overlooking the ocean or pick up something to-go and enjoy a picnic on the sand.

Then spend the afternoon however you like:

🚲 Rent a bike and cruise the scenic waterfront path.

🚣 Rent a kayak or paddleboard and explore the calm harbor.

🏐 Join a game of beach volleyball.

🏖️ Relax on East Beach with a good book.

🌊 Or simply kick off your shoes and enjoy a peaceful walk along the shoreline.

One of the best things about Santa Barbara is that there's no wrong way to spend an afternoon by the ocean.

🌅 8. Finish with Sunset at Shoreline Park

📍 Shoreline Dr.

Before heading back to Los Angeles, stop at Shoreline Park.

It's one of the best places to watch the sun dip into the Pacific while overlooking the coastline and Channel Islands.

It's the perfect ending to a relaxing day.

Most visitors head straight to Griffith Observatory...

Locals know the real magic is spending an entire day discovering all the hidden gems that Griffith Park has to offer.

Here's how I spend the perfect day.

🥾 1. Start Your Day with a Hike

Hiking is practically a way of life in Los Angeles, so start your day like a local with a pretty easy hike with the best payoff.

Famous for its appearance as the entrance to the Batcave in the 1960s Batman television series, Bronson Cave also appeared in countless other movies and TV shows such as Scorpion King and Star Trek. Plus a great bonus of the hike if you walk around the cave you'll see a pretty great view of the Hollywood Sign.

🧺 2. Pick Up Picnic Supplies

There are endless places to enjoy an amazing picnic in Griffith Park, but locals know a secret spot.

Once home to the city's original zoo, this forgotten corner of Griffith Park has become one of Los Angeles' most unique picnic spots. It has also been featured in films such as Anchorman.
