Margaret Hamilton spent decades trying to undo what her green face did to kids. Children ran from her on the street. She worried the role had given them the wrong idea about who she really was. So in 1976 she put the makeup and the hat back on for Sesame Street, playing the Wicked Witch of the West one more time. The pitch was that watching the witch lose her broomstick, bicker with David over getting it back, and pick up an admirer in Oscar the Grouch would help kids handle their fear of her. At one point she threatens to turn Big Bird into a feather duster. It backfired. Parents flooded the Children's Television Workshop with letters describing screams and tears, and kids who refused to watch again. Episode 847 aired once, on February 10, 1976, then vanished. Nobody saw it again until an archive screening in 2019.
