American Express BUSINESS CLASS approached me to be one of three featured business owners who raised prices during the pandemic.

While raising prices or introducing new fees may seem daunting, it shouldn't be a negative experience. I know many travel advisors tremble at the thought of charging planning fees, let alone raising the price. It shouldn't be that way. You deserve to have a thriving business, and if the cost of life and your business goes up... so too should your prices.

In this article, I share how we successfully raised our prices in our membership in 2022 without upsetting our community and losing less than 0.5% of our members. We had avoided price increases for many years. It was our first price increase in the four years of running our membership, and we were determined to find a way that made us and our members comfortable while still ensuring the sustainability of our business.

So, fellow business owners and travel advisors, take heart!

Raising prices doesn't have to be a doom and gloom affair. Approach it with a sprinkle of humor, a dollop of transparency, and a dash of creativity, and you might find yourself soaring to new heights of success. Nod your head, if you have ever thought to yourself “OMG I could never imagine spending that much money on XYZ”

XYZ could be a $85K Hermes purse, a $300K Aston Martin car hotel, a $70K domestic private jet ride, a $5K bottle red of wine, or $10K per night hotel suite.

I nod my head. I have said that out loud many times.

There are a few reasons we do this. Let’s talk about it from the perspective of selling travel:

- Selling luxury travel requires a combination of knowledge, expertise and a strong personal touch.
- Selling travel requires you to have unwavering confidence in the value of a service or experience.
- Selling luxury travel requires you to stop shopping from your own pocket

So if high-end luxury services and experiences are not in your budget, how do you get that knowledge, expertise and confidence to sell it?

You have to experience it for yourself! There is no other way to under high end luxury. Read all the brochures and blogs you can, but first hand experience give you the feelings. And isn’t that what luxury is? Feelings!

If you don’t have $500K to jump in a jet and spend the weekend at the Four Seasons in Seychelles do this instead…

Reach out to your closest Four Seasons (or wait until you are in a city for something else and do it then).

Book yourself in for on night - mid week is always best for a good rate and the best photos.

Check to see if there are industry rates and/or when their quietest month is to get the best rate.

Arrive at the hotel at 9am. Eat breakfast.

Go for a walk around the property.

Eat lunch.

Spend the afternoon in the pool or working in a beautiful corner of the hotel.

Check in.

Walk the room and pay attention to every tiny detail - as if you were looking for ants. Note how you feel.

Read the magazine in the room.

Go have a drink at the bar or a coffee on the terrace.

Eat dinner.

Sleep.

On the second day, do all those things again and after dinner that night, go home. You’ll have two full days and a blissful evening of high-end luxury.

This type of investment into your business will truly help your confidence when selling luxury travel especially if you are new to the industry.

Last year I started watching The Home Edit on Netflix. Have you seen it? 📺

It’s where a team of expert organizers go into people’s homes to create organized bliss.

They edit their belongings, categorize them and then put everything into the right place.

Their clients get a full transformation - from crazy chaos to organized and efficient. 💫

I mean, who doesn’t want perfectly organized drawers, cupboards and pantries?!

STEP AWAY FROM YOUR KEYBOARD ⌨️

BEFORE you hit post or publish on your next piece of marketing for your travel business... including but not limited to a caption, image, bundle, template, or swipe file, make sure you are 100% sure you have considered all of the below (as a starting point). We saw one too many travel advisors get burned during 2022. When we know better we can do better!

👉🏽 Do you have approval from the photographer, graphic creator or author of the original piece of content to use it? Yes, this includes supplier provided content, free stock sites, and content made by marketing agencies. Just because you can buy it or download it for free, doesn't mean you have permission from the original creator to use it.

👉🏽 There are rules around how pieces of content can be used. Take Disney for example. They have a very strong brand - so strong that it is globally recognized. You can't use their images or name to market and sell without permission.

👉🏽 Permission is not carte blanche (complete freedom to do what you want). Tourism boards and suppliers might give you access to their gallery or media center but it comes with terms and conditions. Know how you want to use an image before you download it and keep a copy of the terms and conditions.

👉🏽 Forgiveness instead of permission is not legally OK. Ask the person selling you the content if they have permission from the original creator for you to use it in the way you intend. There are always rules and boundaries.

👉🏽 Read the terms and conditions carefully before you buy marketing content. At the end of the day, your business is accountable for how you use the content regardless of where you got it from.
