Set in the late 1990s, a time of crushing poverty in Cuba known ever since as "el periodo especial" (the special period), this sweet film charts the desperate and heroic effort of a man and his son to get to Havana and retrieve the boy's birthday present from his mother, who had previously fled to the United States. Father and son have just one day to bicycle to Havana in order to pickup the package from an American tourist who is departing Cuba that evening. No subtitles, but lots of simple Spanish and a straightforward and compelling story make this worth watching regardless of your Spanish fluency. Enjoy!
