In 1954 a man boldly challenged racial segregation by buying a house for Andrew and Charlotte Wade, a Black couple blocked from purchasing in an all-white neighborhood in Louisville. After the house was attacked with rocks, gunshots, a burning cross, and even a bomb under the child’s bedroom, he was charged with sedition for supposedly plotting a race war.

Convicted in December 1954, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison, served seven months, and released on a $40,000 bond – the highest in Kentucky at the time. Despite the conviction later being overturned, the ordeal cost him his job and marked his life. He continued his activism until his death from a heart attack in 1975.
