New Years Eve, I pulled out my old dance shoes that had been packed away for 8 years, yet another victim of domestic abuse, to attend a Big Band New Years Eve with my daughter and her fiancé at what is now a museum for the aircraft carrier, @usshornetmuseum an affiliate of the Smithsonian, in these photos.
As young as I can remember, my parents took me dancing with them to the old songs of a time that only seemed innocent. My dad would carry me while he danced with my mother, and the music breathed a life of its own through me and so dancing would become a space where I always return to express the pain of life in a world that regularly left me unanchored and numb. It is a part of my identity, the story I understand of myself.
It is my hope in the New Year that we all may become honest storytellers through our “travels”and that more of these ships will be docked as museum pieces as historical reminders of all truths of this country’s history, so that we can learn from our past, grieve any betrayals, honor the sincere, process the realities and build something new in its place….hopefully with more music, art and song 🕊️
