This time of year, I always have a surge of emergency calls for customers with frozen/broken water pipes. Sometimes it is avoidable, but often times, it is not. The conditions we are experiencing and the forthcoming drop in temperature is something many of us and our homes have never experienced before. These are the conditions that create costly repairs.
Keep your water constantly moving! A small trickle of water from both lines (hot & cold) from plumbing on an exterior wall is necessary in temperatures like this. Pipes have a chance to freeze up in just a couple hours overnight in temperatures like this, and when away from the home during the day when water is not moving.
If you experience loss of hot water or pressure/air when opening the lines, get heat on the line ASAP and call us. These are signs of a costly impending freeze up.
Plan ahead and don't leave your home unattended. Your house is the safest place to be right now.
