My Dad continued on his eternal journey last week, at home and surrounded by his family. He was larger than life but a friend to everyone he met. I know the neighborhood pooches miss him as they look at the now empty chair on the porch where he always had their treats and a story or two for whoever was holding the leash. As a child I watched him play City or Church league basketball and when I was in high school he would leave work early to watch me run track. He and my mom were very proud of my work as a kapa maker and every time I was in a magazine I'd have to get two copies so they don't fight😄. Dad we know you were ready to go, I hope lots of family were there to meet you. Thank you for my life and everything you taught me. Love you and miss you!

Ramblings and rumblings at Makaha this morning. This afternoon, more like somebody spilled all the 70% cacao into the ocean. it

I was asked to make a kapa for someone special and decided on a scarf, which meant spending about an hour softening it. This person is from Kauai so the blue color and watermark are for Wai'ale'ale and the red 'alae color and watermark are for Hanapepe. It's a good piece of kapa, very soft and strong.

Cleaned out the workshop the other day and had this wheelbarrow of wood for kapa tools. Thought I'd just make one new be**er and ended up on a be**er bender and made five and touched up a pocket kua. The woods are Naio, A'ali'i, Ohi'a, Lignam vitae and monkeypod for the kua. Shaping tool of choice, a Ryobi electric planner.

When he isn't doting dad and son, Master of Makaha Surf Universe, killer of Chiefs and innumerable other activities, Rusty Keaulana might be persuaded to help strip one bamboocha kapa😍 Mahalo my friend!

Hopefully you also have such a place, and maybe you like to believe that place loves you back. For years I would be in the water in the dark, floating, contemplating, catching waves, or not, watching the unfolding of a sky-blue-pink morning. This to I'll be going back and reclaiming my little space.

Rehoming 4 hohoa from my working group. As a woodworker and kapa practitioner it's always been a pleasure to make my own tools for myself, students and classes. Typically I use an electric planner for shaping so I can get bevels on the handle, which make it more comfortable to hold and as we see in the kahiko hohoa. They are ready to work so don't give them a life of leisure 😄 $250.00 each. Not native wood but they get the job done.

We've had to sit on this news for a few months but can finally tell you I'm one of the Fellows in this amazing group of artists for 2025, and also one of 11 Kumu/artists/practitioners from Hawaii since 2008. "This year's class represents four native Hawaiian artists and/or collaboratives, and 12 indigenous artists/collaboratives". unitedstatesartists.org

Being an artist/teacher/practitioner puts you on the bleeding edge of being a packrat/hoarder so while making yet another grand effort at organizing the studio I found these tea towels and some olena, kukui and cochineal dyes and here we go.
