When I say I have local connections in Italy, this is what I mean!

Meet Gianni, a local guide I connected with at a tourism event in Naples. He invited me to experience one of his walking tours, and naturally, I said yes. Research that involves eating my way through Naples? Sign me up. 😂

We visited the famous Gran Caffè Gambrinus, ate pizza fritta, babà, and cuoppo, learned about the Neapolitan lucky horn, stopped for drinks, and watched artisans at work on Christmas Alley.

And the whole time, Gianni was sharing stories and history that made me appreciate a city I already loved even more.

This is one of my favorite parts of being a travel advisor. I get to experience these tours firsthand, build relationships with local guides, and bring those same experiences to my clients.

I lived in Italy for several years, and those connections didn’t disappear when I moved back to the States. They’re a huge part of what I bring to the table when planning trips.

Unpopular opinion: Naples deserves more than a day trip!

I lived just outside Naples for several years, and if there’s one thing I wish more travelers understood, it’s that Naples is SO much more than a quick stop for pizza on your way to the Amalfi Coast.

Don’t get me wrong, the pizza alone is worth the trip. But there’s also incredible architecture, castles, beaches, historic cafés, beautiful theaters, and some of the best food you’ll ever eat.

It’s loud, chaotic, gritty, beautiful, and full of personality. And that’s exactly why I love it.

As a travel advisor specializing in Italy, I always encourage my clients to give Naples the time it deserves.

Unpopular opinion: Herculaneum is better. There, I said it. 😬

I’ve visited both Pompeii and Herculaneum multiple times, and while Pompeii is absolutely worth seeing, I actually prefer Herculaneum.

It’s smaller, less overwhelming, and the level of preservation is incredible. You can still see ancient wooden structures, mosaics, and even upper floors of buildings that survived the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.

And here’s where my travel advisor perspective comes in: the most famous attraction isn’t always the best fit for your trip.

If you’re short on time, traveling with kids, or don’t want to spend half a day exploring a massive archaeological site, Herculaneum might actually be the better choice.

This is why I love helping people plan trips to Italy. There’s so much more to experience beyond the places everyone already knows about.

After spending years living in Italy, there’s something really special about being back in New Hampshire, especially in the fall 🤎

And this weekend made it even sweeter because a friend I met while living in Italy came to visit with her friends, and I got to show them a little piece of my home.

We spent the day riding through the woods with Concord Scenic Railriders, soaking up all the New England fall goodness.

I love that life has given me friendships all over the world, and now I get to share the place where my story started 🥰

I know I romanticize Italy a lot. And after living there for the past few years, how could I not?

But I also think it’s important to show the side of Italy that doesn’t make it into the pretty Instagram reels.

Right now, southern Italy is dealing with a very real crisis.

Truck drivers have been protesting skyrocketing diesel prices, driven in part by the war in Iran. And because so much of Italy depends on goods being transported by truck, the effects are being felt everywhere.

Gas stations are running out of fuel.

Grocery store shelves are sitting empty as deliveries aren’t making it through.

Fresh food is going to waste because it can’t get where it needs to go.

Even the production of Italy’s beloved buffalo mozzarella has been disrupted.

And this isn’t just an inconvenience for tourists. These are people’s livelihoods, families, businesses, and everyday lives being affected.

As a travel advisor who specializes in Italy, I spend a lot of time sharing the beautiful parts. The coastal views, the food, the culture, the little moments that make you fall in love with this country.

But loving a place also means acknowledging the realities of living there.

Italy is beautiful. It’s magical. It’s one of my favorite places in the world.

But it’s also a real country, with real people facing real challenges.

And I think it’s important to share both sides.

Everyone wants to experience the REAL Italy… until Italy starts acting like Italy.

There’s currently a truck driver strike affecting Naples, with reports of grocery shortages and limited fuel availability.

And while this isn’t exactly the Italy you see all over Instagram, it’s a reminder that life here isn’t always pasta, Aperol Spritzes, and gorgeous coastal views.

Strikes, transportation disruptions, and unexpected changes are all things travelers should be prepared for.

Does that mean you shouldn’t visit Italy? Absolutely not. But it DOES mean having some flexibility (and someone who knows how to navigate these situations 😉) makes a difference.
