We are putting together a Dawn2Dusk Adventures journey along one of Europe’s most beautiful rivers—and I would love for you to join us!

The pre-cruise journey begins September 9, 2027, to allow yourself extra time in Amsterdam before boarding AmaWaterways’ AmaViola for a seven-night river cruise from Amsterdam to Basel.

Low Water Levels in Europe: What Travelers Should Know About River Cruises

You've probably seen headlines about low water levels on parts of the Rhine and Danube Rivers this summer. While these conditions can affect some itineraries, it's important to know that not every river, itinerary, or sailing is impacted, and every river cruise line handles these situations a little differently.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

🚢 AmaWaterways
AmaWaterways' goal is to keep your vacation as seamless as possible. When adjustments are necessary, Ama coordinates a ship swap so you can continue your cruise. Guests are contacted directly if their sailing is affected. Several of the ships also have lower drafts than other ships, making the boats have less problems sailing through lower water levels

🚢 Avalon Waterways
Avalon also works hard to preserve the overall experience. Depending on river conditions, they may adjust embarkation points, modify itineraries, or, in some cases, cancel specific departures when safe navigation isn't possible. Affected guests are contacted directly to discuss available options.

🚢 Other River Cruise Lines
Viking, Uniworld, Scenic, Emerald, and others are also making operational adjustments when necessary. These may include itinerary changes, alternate transportation, or modified ports of call, with safety always remaining the top priority.

💡 Our Advice

River levels are part of nature, and experienced river cruise companies have contingency plans they've refined over many years. The key isn't finding a cruise line that never has to make adjustments—because no one can control the weather. The key is choosing a company that communicates well, has strong contingency plans, and focuses on delivering the best possible vacation despite changing conditions.

✈️ Delta Travelers: There's a New Way to Fly Premium for Less!

Delta has introduced Basic fares for its premium cabins, including Delta First, Delta Premium Select, and Delta One (now called Basic Business).

These new fares offer the same onboard premium experience—comfortable seating, elevated dining, and exceptional service—but at a lower price. The trade-off? You'll give up some flexibility and perks, including:

• Seat assignment after check-in
• Reduced checked baggage allowance
• Fewer SkyMiles earned
• No complimentary or paid upgrades
• Change and cancellation fees
• No automatic lounge access (with some temporary exceptions through January 18, 2027)

If you're someone who values the onboard experience more than flexibility, these fares could be a great way to enjoy Delta's premium cabins while saving money.

Today I hold close the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice to keep us free. 🇺🇸

I have personal stories of someone very close to me who earned the Purple Heart after saving several fellow soldiers while witnessing the loss of the friends who had become his family. He was only in his late teens and early twenties when this happened. Though he survived, he carried survivor’s guilt with him for the rest of his life.

As I travel, I often come across monuments dedicated to soldiers who never made it home — many whose remains were never even found. There is one in particular in Europe that has always stayed with me: a memorial standing quietly beside the ocean, honoring young men who sailed out to protect their country and never returned.

Standing there, looking out over the water, it becomes impossible not to think about the weight of that sacrifice. The dreams they never got to fulfill. The families forever changed. The freedoms we experience every single day because of people willing to give everything.

So today, I challenge all of us to pause for a moment — beyond the cookouts, long weekends, and celebrations — and truly appreciate the price that was paid for the freedoms we often take for granted.

May we never forget those who gave their lives, nor the families who carried that loss long after the war ended. ❤️🤍💙
