It’s bird season! This week we were able to get on the green-winged teal, mallards, turkeys, grouse and woodcocks. Siggy is the real deal. Unfortunately he got cut somehow while hunting a couple days ago and 12.5 year old Blaze was put back into the driver’s seat yesterday. Despite the wind, she did great, and pointed seven woodcocks in an hour, and then a beautiful grouse that I ended up shooting, and she retrieved.
Some ask me if Blaze will be a retired dog, and my answer may seem off, but I’ll hunt Blaze in some capacity until she dies. She loses her mind if i go without her, and although she can’t hear anymore, she’s still very effective and is wired to hunt. Hopefully Sig heals quickly, we will be going 12 of the next 14 days!

Zone 18 was being very stubborn all week. I had my A+ spot that I was banking on all set and ready, but that nor’easter had other plans. I knew there were a couple good bulls in there, but the wind was wrong so I skipped it on Monday. Another hunter didn’t skip it though… And my Cell camera sent me a heartbreaking picture of a really nice bull walking out, and two guys with a r***e standing in that exact spot six minutes later. I had scouted all over the place and was so excited to hunt in that spot… And someone beat me to it. As it turns out, they didn’t get it, they went in with the wrong wind, and probably called the bull out, and after he smelled them, he took off. But regardless, it was compromised. That night add a ball respond from over 300 yards away, but he never came in.
Tuesday, I called a bull in to about 30 yards, but he came in silent and started thrashing when he was really close, but he never came out.
Wednesday nothing.
Thursday nothing.
Every daylight minute since Monday morning, we were at it. Tanner is 14 years old and did not complain once. Same thing with his dad, Derek… And his grandfather, Paul. These guys stayed super positive, and soaked up the experience. We were putting on some hard miles and calling and calling and calling with no responses. Days of it. But we kept grinding. This morning, I was pretty excited about our first spot. We snuck in quiet and walked over a mile while doing a bunch of cow calling and zero response. We got to the end of the road, and just parked it there for a few moments while I kept doing some cow calls. Something got my attention about three or 400 yards away. Maybe was that something?

Here he comes and he’s grunting every step. He’s getting closer and another bull lights up behind him. It’s about to happen. The closest one gets to about 15 feet away, but he was totally obscured by the woods. I do one quick antler thrash on the ground, and that sealed the deal. He walked out at 10 yards, and these guys made an awesome shot. It was a moment they, nor I will ever forget.

This week was a grind. With 8 hunters in camp, we only harvested two bears. We saw some others, but two were archery hunting and couldn’t get a safe shot off. One had a nice one in close but the light wasn’t good. Lots of nighttime activity. They all hunted hard and were great about how it went. I learned early on to be up front about weeks like this and I don’t fluff the stats. Last year we went 100% this week (minus one hunter who had to leave early). This year 25%. That is the way hunting can go sometimes. I want to sincerely thank all of our bear hunters that came up to hunt with us. You guys were a pleasure to guide and myself and my family are beyond grateful.
This week I’ll be guiding a zone 18 moose hunt and some bear trappers. Hopefully we can make short work of all these bears that seem to prefer the night time! And hopefully I can call one of these bulls out into range. Never a day off, let’s get to it!
