Ulysses S. Grant was born on this day — April 27, 1822.

Today, you can still visit the small Ohio cottage where his story began.

The Grant Birthplace State Memorial in Point Pleasant, Ohio, preserves the small home where the future Civil War general and 18th president of the United States was born. It’s a humble stop, but that’s what makes it interesting. Before Grant became one of the most important figures in American history, his life started here, in a modest home along the Ohio River.

We visited the site and wrote more about what you can see, why it matters, and how to plan your own stop.

On this day in 1877, Rutherford B. Hayes was declared the winner of one of the most disputed elections in American history.

The election of 1876 came down to contested electoral votes in several states, months of political wrangling, and ultimately the Compromise of 1877 — a deal that reshaped the course of Reconstruction and the nation’s future. Hayes would become the 19th President of the United States, but the controversy surrounding his victory still sparks debate nearly 150 years later.

🇺🇸 Want to walk where history happened?

You can visit Hayes’ beautiful home, Spiegel Grove, now part of the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums in Fremont, Ohio. Tour his Victorian mansion, explore exhibits on the election of 1876, and pay your respects at his hillside gravesite overlooking the grounds. It’s one of the country’s first presidential libraries — and a peaceful place to reflect on a pivotal chapter in American politics.

On February 20, 1962, John Glenn made history as the first American to orbit the Earth aboard Friendship 7. His flight lasted just under five hours, circling the globe three times and proving that the United States could compete in the space race. Glenn’s courage and calm under pressure made him a national hero and a symbol of American ingenuity and determination.

Decades later, Glenn continued to inspire — serving as a U.S. senator and even returning to space at age 77, becoming the oldest person ever to do so.

You can celebrate his legacy by visiting the John & Annie Glenn Museum in New Concord, Ohio, located in his restored boyhood home. The museum offers exhibits about his early life, aviation career, and groundbreaking space missions — a fitting tribute to a true American pioneer.

On this day in 1948, we said goodbye to Orville Wright, co-inventor of the airplane and a hometown tinkerer who helped launch the modern age.

Before Kitty Hawk, there was Dayton — the bicycle shop, the experiments, the late nights sketching wings and engines. This is where the dream of flight was built piece by piece.

Today you can explore that story at Dayton Aviation National Historical Park, touring the Wright Cycle Company, their print shop, Huffman Prairie Flying Field, and the neighborhood where the brothers lived and worked. It’s less beach dunes, more workshop grit — and honestly, where the magic really began.

Because every big leap starts in a small garage.
