Living in Colorado, I didn't expect Alaska's mountains to leave me speechless. They did.

I expected incredible scenery, but what surprised me most was how much of Alaska's magic happened on land. Driving the Seward Highway, riding the Alaska Railroad, spotting whales in Kenai Fjords, and learning about Alaska's Indigenous cultures gave me a much deeper appreciation for this remarkable state.

When was the last vacation that left you feeling genuinely refreshed and not like you needed another vacation to recover?
Everyone dreams about the Mediterranean in the middle of summer. But if you ask me when I’d rather go, it’s September or October.
The weather is still warm, the sea is inviting, but the pace slows down.
The long lines fade. The cafés linger. Mornings begin a little slower, lunches stretch a little longer, and there’s finally time to simply enjoy where you are instead of rushing to the next “must-see.”
Whether it’s Greece, Italy, the South of France, or Croatia, fall is when the Mediterranean feels a little more authentic and restorative.
If Europe has been on your list, don’t overlook the shoulder season. It just might become your favorite time to go.

One thing I learned on my recent trip to Alaska: don’t stop at the cruise.
The glaciers, whales, and coastal scenery are incredible, but adding a land tour gives you a completely different perspective on the state.
Traveling by rail through Alaska’s interior, spending time near Denali National Park, and staying at the Princess Wilderness Lodges allowed me to experience a side of Alaska that many visitors never see.
This experience was part of a hosted trip with Princess Cruises, and it reinforced why combining a cruise with a few nights on land is so great.

The journey from Anchorage to Seward is one of the highlights of an Alaska vacation.

The Seward Highway is often ranked among the most scenic drives in North America, with snow-capped mountains, glaciers, waterfalls, and dramatic coastal views along Turnagain Arm.

Not interested in driving? You can also experience these incredible views by train or motorcoach.

One of my favorite stops was the Wildlife Conservation Center, where rescued bears, moose, bison, musk oxen, elk, and other native animals live in a beautiful natural setting. It’s a wonderful opportunity to see Alaska’s iconic wildlife up close while supporting conservation efforts.

Whether you travel by car, train, or coach, allow time to enjoy the journey. This is one route where you’ll want to keep your camera handy!

Most travelers see Anchorage as a place to pass through on the way to somewhere else. After spending time there, I’d encourage you to stay a little longer!
Walk or bike the scenic coastal trails, learn about Alaska’s Indigenous cultures at the Alaska Native Heritage Center, explore Kincaid Park’s beautiful landscapes and Cold War history, and enjoy surprisingly great dining featuring fresh seafood and local ingredients.
Enjoy all the adventures in their 20+ hours of sunlight in the summer!
