The Ultimate HHN Survival Guide: Top 10 Tips from HHN Vets
I recently posted a question on a HHN sub about suggested mistakes to avoid when going to Halloween Horror Nights. Here are the top 10 takeaways from those who responded!
Wearing Uncomfortable Shoes: Skip the flip-flops and unsupportive footwear. You will be on your feet for 8+ hours, mostly standing in queues. Wear well-broken-in, cushioned walking shoes.
Going In Without an Open Mind (and Over-Analyzing Reviews): Don't let YouTube reviews or house ratings ruin your expectations. Everyone experiences houses differently—go in open-minded and avoid spoilers if you want full immersion.
Not Hydrating Properly: Relying on alcohol or sugary drinks will wear you down fast. Drink actual water or electrolyte drinks throughout the night to stay standing in the Florida heat and humidity.
Expecting to Do Everything in One Night: With 10 houses, scare zones, and shows, trying to squeeze in every single thing on a regular ticket can lead to burnout. Set realistic expectations.
Forgetting Rain Gear and Ponchos: HHN takes place during Florida's rain/hurricane season. Bring a cheap or reusable poncho so sudden downpours don't cut your night short.
Overlooking Chafing Prevention High humidity + miles of walking = severe chafing: Wear anti-chafing shorts (like bike shorts under skirts/dresses) or use Body Glide/anti-chafing powder. Avoid wearing wet swim trunks into the event.
Doing Full Park Days Right Before HHN: Doing a full daytime park day immediately followed by HHN will leave you exhausted by mid-evening. Save your energy or schedule downtime before the event starts.
Hitting Merch Shops During Peak Night Hours: Don't waste prime scare time carrying bags around. Visit the Tribute Store and buy merch during regular park hours, mid-evening during peak wait times, or right before leaving at 2 AM.
Showing Up Late or Without Early Strategy: Arriving right at or after event opening guarantees immediate 90-plus minute wait times. Arrive early for Stay & Scream / Scream Early options, or make a priority list of your must-do houses instead of starting blindly at the front of the park.
Forgetting to Take Breaks: It's easy to get caught up in the rush, but forgetting to sit down, grab a bite, and rest your legs periodically will ruin the second half of your night.
