FLASHBACK FOTO !!!! Santa Fe RR train climbing the mountains of southern California at Tehachapi Loop. The locomotives going over the top of the tunnel are at the front of the train. The locomotives below going into the tunnel are the mid-train helpers in the same train. The train is mostly out of sight and wrapped around the loop. Summer 1985.

FLASHBACK FOTO !!!! This is a big roadcut in southern California that exposes deformed rocks that are part of the San Andreas Fault. The San Andreas Fault system is the transform boundary between the North American and Pacific Plates. These tectonic plates scrape past each other very slowly; whenever the movement happens, it causes earthquakes. Summer 1985.

FLASHBACK FOTO !!!! Dinosaur National Monument. Summer 2000. This national monument includes much more than the dinosaurs. Beautiful scenery and great geology, among other things! Here are some of the Upper Paleozoic and Lower Mesozoic sedimentary rocks steeply tilted on the flank of an anticline (arch-like fold). The most prominent, light gray, rock layers are the Weber Sandstone (Pennsylvanian-Permian; approximately 285 to 315 million years old). The Weber Ss was formed in a giant desert sand dune field (erg) near the ancient shoreline; this would have looked similar to the modern coastal sand dune desert of Namibia. These rocks were folded when the Rocky Mountains (including the Uinta Mtns) were uplifted at the end of the Cretaceous and into the Early Cenozoic (approximately 50-70 million years ago).

FLASHBACK FOTO !!!! Dinosaur National Monument. Summer 2000. The tilted rock layers, mostly shale with some thin sandstone layers, are the Morrison Formation (Upper Jurassic, approximately 150 million years old). They were deposited on a broad coastal plain-like setting, with rivers, flood plains, lakes, and other environments. Numerous dinosaurs lived there at that time. When they died, some of their bones were buried, preserved, and fossilized in the sediments.

FLASHBACK FOTO !!!! Dinosaur National Monument, northeastern Utah. Summer 2000. Inside the building, one wall is actually a tilted layer of sandstone within the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation (approximately 150 million years old). Numerous dinosaur bones have been partially excavated; in this photo, you can see a limb, a neck and skull, and others. A few of the skeletons that were excavated here are on display at the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh, PA.

FLASHBACK FOTO !!!! Dinosaur National Monument, northeastern Utah. Summer 2000. This national monument is best known for the numerous dinosaur fossils from the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation (approximately 150 million years old). In this photo, you can see the tilted rock layers on the right, over which a large building was built. The sandstone layer is full of dinosaur bones!

FLASHBACK FOTO !!!! Fossil Butte National Monument, southwestern Wyoming. Summer 2000. The very light gray rock layers in the upper parts of the slopes are part of the Green River Formation (Cenozoic, Eocene, approximately 50 million years old). Parts of the Green River Fm, like here, were deposited in big lakes between the newly uplifted ranges of the Rocky Mountains. The Green River Fm of the Fossil Butte area is famous for well-preserved fossils of fish, and many others.
