❤ When Others Turned Her Away, We Stepped In ❤
In Guatemala, many children born with cleft lip and palate face more than just a surgical need — they often have other complex medical challenges. Sadly, most organizations aren’t equipped to handle anything beyond the cleft surgery itself.
That’s where we come in.
Not long ago, we received a call from a mother desperate for help. Her one-year-old daughter had been accepted by another organization but was never scheduled for surgery. No follow-up. No additional exams. Eventually, the mother was simply told her daughter couldn’t have lip surgery — without clear answers or next steps.
When she came to us, we listened. We examined the little girl, reviewed what tests had already been done, and had her mother complete a few more. Then we sat down with our team — surgeons, anesthesiologists, and specialists. It became clear that before her cleft lip could be repaired, she first needed another surgery. That procedure is now scheduled for November, and in January 2026, she’ll finally receive her bilateral lip repair.
But there’s more.
This beautiful little girl was born without ears. Her mother told us she didn’t think her daughter could hear well. She had even been told her daughter had a brain problem — and that’s why she couldn’t hear. It was heartbreaking. No solutions. No hope.
Last week, we arranged a hearing test — and fitted her with a BAHA device. The difference was immediate. This tiny device brought her into the world of sound. Her mother cried tears of joy as she watched her daughter respond like never before.
Now, with a plan in place, real answers, and a path forward — this mother finally has hope again.
Many thanks to our Oklahoma team for providing the BAHA's and starting this entire hearing program!
