Part 3 of 3: Grant County Cartography

To help locals and others understand the addressing of unincorporated Grant County, here’s the third of three cartography (map) lessons. This is especially helpful for those who may be new to Grant County.

This third lesson helps explain distance and addresses east to west from Division. Each mile is represented by a letter that coincides with its sequence in the alphabet. For instance, Road A (the first letter of the alphabet) is one mile from Division. Road B (the second letter of the alphabet) is two miles from Division. Road B.5 is 2.5 miles, Road B.7 is 2.7 miles, and so on.

This numbering will help determine the address of a home or business on a north-to-south county road.

• Division = 0 (zero), addresses between Division and Road A are 0-999
• Road A = 1 mile, addresses are 1000-1999
• Road B = 2 miles, addresses are 2000-2999
• Road K.2 = 11.2 miles, address 11200 (K is the 11th letter of the alphabet)

So, to put it all together:

• 26212 Road A NW is about 26.2 miles north of Baseline. (Baseline represents zero, so the farther north or south you go from Baseline, the higher the numbers become).
• 5206 Road 12 NE is about 5.2 miles east of Division (the 5000 block because E is the fifth letter of the alphabet). Division represents zero, so the farther east or west you are from Division, the higher the numbers become).

Incidentally, the furthest west county road is Road Road Y.5 SW in Sunland Estates. The furthest east county roads are Road X NE east of Wilson Creek and Road X SE east of Warden.

The outliers in this plan are roads that are named and not numbered. Named roads include Martin Road NW, Lazy Acres Road NW, Potato Frontage Road SE, Adams Road NW and SW, and many others.

Roads like Adams Road that run north to south have numbering based on the distance from Baseline (explained in Lesson 2).

Roads like Martin Road NW run east to west, so numbering is based on the distance from Division (explained in this lesson).

Named roads can be almost anywhere in the county. Perhaps the easiest way to find the location of an address on a named road is to consult an app such as Google Maps.

Part 2 of 3: Grant County Cartography

To help both locals and others understand the addressing of Grant County, here’s the second of three cartography (map) lessons. This is especially helpful for those who may be new to Grant County.

This second lesson helps explain distance and addresses north to south from Baseline. Each mile is represented by a number. For instance, Road 1 is one mile from Baseline. Road 2 is two miles from Baseline. Road 2.5 is 2.5 miles, Road 2.7 is 2.7 miles, and so on.

This numbering will help determine what the address is for a home or business on a north-to-south county road.

• Baseline Road = 0 (zero), addresses between Baseline and Road 1 are 0-999
• Road 1 = 1 mile, addresses are 1000-1999
• Road 2 = 2 miles, addresses are 2000-2999
• Road 13.2 = 13.2 miles, address 13200

The furthest north county road is Road 57.2 NE near Electric City. The furthest south county Road is Road 30 SW down near the Vernita Bridge.

Tuesday: Part 3 of this lesson.

Explainer: Part 1 - Grant County Grid Addressing System

Now that wilfire season is in motion, it's a great time for us to provide education to enhance the public's emergency preparedness.

To help locals and others understand the addressing of unincorporated (outside city limits) Grant County, here’s the first of three cartography (map) lessons. This is especially helpful for those who may be new to Grant County.

The first lesson is the four quadrants of Grant County. The county is divided into Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, and Southwest as shown on the map.

The county is divided north and south by Baseline Road, which runs parallel to and just south of Interstate 90.

The county is divided east and west by Division Road. Even when there is no physical section of Division Road, an imaginary line indicates where the change between east and west happens.

Monday: Part 2 of this cartography lesson.
