Ghent, Belgium, tends to get overlooked next to places like Brussels and Bruges, but it’s definitely worth knowing about. You’ll find canals, historic buildings, plenty of cafés and restaurants, and, because it’s a university city, a lively energy that sets it apart.

If Belgium is on your list, Ghent deserves a spot too.
