Several people have asked about the dark patches in the ocean off Surfside. What you’re seeing are bait balls…large, tightly packed schools of small fish. When threatened by predators, these fish instinctively group together in dense, swirling formations to confuse attackers and increase their chances of survival.
While they may look fascinating, it’s best to keep your distance. Sharks and other predators are often nearby, using these bait balls as a buffet. Thanks for the photo Emily Coen!
