Well, this wasn’t the wildlife encounter I had in mind. 😳

I was walking through a garden when I came across a whole lot of flapping and commotion. I know nature is gonna nature, but this was pretty uncomfortable to watch.

Anyone else ever witnessed something in nature they really wished they hadn’t?

Would you ride 1,500 feet inside a former West Virginia coal mine? 👀

I did at Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine, with a retired coal miner as our guide. And honestly, his stories were the best part.

We stopped three times underground as he showed us how miners worked, how they were paid, why they carried canaries, and some of the dangers he faced during his own years underground.

And once you come back above ground, there’s an entire coal camp to explore.

If you’re planning a West Virginia road trip, put this one on your list. 👇https://getlostintheusa.com/beckley-exhibition-coal-mine/

The African American History Monument at the South Carolina State House tells centuries of South Carolina history through twelve bronze panels and sculptures that trace the story from African heritage and enslavement through emancipation, Reconstruction, the Civil Rights Movement, and the many contributions African Americans have made to South Carolina.

The memorial begins as you walk by the outline of a slave ship. It also includes rocks from Africa, representing the homeland of many enslaved Africans.

What stayed with me most were the three-dimensional sculptures. The expressions on their faces, their posture, and the incredible attention to detail made each scene feel deeply human.

If you’re visiting the South Carolina State House, don’t just admire the building. Take a few extra minutes to walk through this memorial. I almost guarantee you’ll spend longer here than you planned.

This was one of the most meaningful stops during my visit to the State House.VisitLakeMurraySC Capital City/Lake Murray Country Discover South Carolina

If you're visiting the Natchitoches area, don't skip Melrose on the Cane.

I expected to enjoy the history, but the highlight for me was seeing Clementine Hunter's colorful murals in the African House, right where she painted them. The guided tour also shares the fascinating story of the Métoyer family, free people of color who helped shape Louisiana's Cane River Creole community, along with the artists and writers who later made Melrose their creative home.

I put together everything you need to know before you visit, including what to see, what not to miss, and why I'd recommend taking the guided tour.

If every small town had the same personality, road trips would get pretty boring.

Floyd, Virginia does its own thing.

You’ll find colorful shops, local artists, live music, quirky finds, and an easygoing atmosphere that makes you want to slow down and wander for a while. I could’ve happily spent an entire weekend here.

If you’re driving the Blue Ridge Parkway or exploring southwest Virginia, don’t just pass through. Give yourself time to explore Floyd.

📍Save this stop for your next Virginia road trip.
