Yesterday, we said goodbye to our big bright pumpkin of a kitty. She came to us when she was just over a year old and has filled every day with her light ever since.
She was pure joy, always eager to greet her keepers with that spark in her eyes and her playful, silly antics. She loved splashing in her pool, rolling her giant ball through the grass, playing with scent-enriched boxes, standing lookout from her platform, and in her later years, she cherished quiet fall days like yesterday, lounging in the sun as it warmed her vibrant fire-orange coat and chubby, fuzzy white belly.
Her final day was perfect: cool fall weather, a delicious venison dinner (kindly donated by a local resident), whipped cream shots, and her beloved bottle of milk. Though our hearts broke knowing we’d never see her watching for us again, they were full knowing she left surrounded only by compassion and love.
With warm milk still on her chin, she grew sleepy, gently laid her head down, and peacefully slipped away, comforted and held close by the keepers who adored her. Her deep trust in us made her transcendence as beautiful and serene as she deserved.
Bhuva lived to the remarkable age of 21, equivalent to nearly 100 in human years. Tigers in the wild typically survive 8–10 years; those in human care average 15–18. Bhuva far outlived both, a testament to the extraordinary love and attentive care her park family gave her every single day.
To honor her legacy beyond our park, Bhuva was gently transported to a veterinary research lab for a full necropsy. The insights gained will help veterinarians worldwide better care for geriatric tigers. Her cremated remains will return home to us next week, where her spirit will be free to roam.
Bhuva, you were family. Your fierce, gentle spirit remains with us always. 🐅🧡
Keepers and veterinarians everywhere face one of the hardest roles imaginable. They pour boundless love, compassion, and expertise into every animal every day, only to endure profound loss when the time comes. Yet they rise again, hearts aching, to offer that same unwavering care to every creature still in their charge. Their strength is quiet, their devotion unbreakable and deserving of kindness .
