Another ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ stay at Bigfoot’s Badin Retreat!

This one made us smile. Our guests enjoyed the screened porch, shuffleboard, bunk room, golf cart and — especially for the kids — the vintage Pepsi machine. 🥤

But this view isn’t too bad either. 🌅

Cool bit of local history.

In the early 1900s, developers began laying out streets, foundations, and even a rail spur for a planned industrial town called Whitney along the Yadkin River's Narrows in Stanly County. The plan called for a massive hydroelectric dam and a manufacturing hub built around it, and construction crews poured real infrastructure into the ground before the project stalled.

When Alcoa eventually built its dam nearby at Badin instead, the abandoned townsite of Whitney was left half finished, its foundations and streets slowly reclaimed by brush, and years later much of the site was submerged under the reservoir the dam created. What remains today is mostly visible only when lake levels drop low enough to expose old foundations and roadbeds beneath the water.

Whitney never got the chance to become the town its planners imagined, and instead became one of North Carolina's stranger kinds of ghost towns, a place that was drowned before it was ever finished. 🌊

When I put Bigfoot’s Badin Retreat together, I wanted it to be the kind of place where families could relax without worrying about whether they had everything they needed. It’s great to hear when guests notice the little things—from the stocked kitchen to the kayaks, paddleboards, and all the extras around the house.
