Alligators are the loudest reptiles in North America.

Come spring the whole bayou rumbles with their bellows, deep enough to make the water dance on their backs.

By August they've quieted down some.

It's an air plant, kin to the pineapple, drinking everything it needs straight out of the bayou air with no roots in the ground.

It's been draping these cypress for centuries, and it photographs even better in person.
