Have you seen the Moon last night (1) and tonight (2)? Today we had a Total Lunar Eclipse, visible in the Eastern Hemisphere. But she is still big and beautiful here

I'm not your typical Naturalist, to say the least. I don't dress the part, I'm not a scientist (unless you consider social science a science, I don't), I've never done any official studies of the natural world and I certainly am rarely found in the "proper " footwear. But a Naturalist, I am. I study the natural world on a daily basis, observing the environment around me, making note of the trees, the birds, the insects, the plants, etc that I see, looking for changes and new things. What I learn I share with others in the hopes that they will fall in love with nature too. I spend most of my time in the city, finding nature around me. This is not the "typical" space of a Naturalist (I'm an Urban Naturalist!) But it is a space I believe is so important to study as our wilderness disappears. So many of us, my former self included, have ignored nature in Urban settings, thinking we had to go out into it by leaving the city. It turns out, nature is all around us and by appreciating and cultivating nature in our urban settings, we become healthier too.
Once in a while, I do go out into nature, so to speak. Yesterday, I went to Jean Lafitte National Park on the West Bank and did all but one of their trails. I was pretty much the only human out there, a rarity for me. I saw so many beautiful friends!
1. Me not at all looking like a Naturalist but instead like me
2. Eastern Landlubber Grasshopper
3. Monarch Butterfly on Bidens Alba (leave them if you can, they're not just a "w**d")
4. Golden Orb Weaver Spider
5. Baby Alligator
6. SaltMarsh Mallow
7. Horned Passalus Beetle
8. The path at Christmas Road
9. American Beautyberry
10. ButtonBush
11. Bald Cypress
12. Pickerelw**d
13. More ButtonBush
14. Human stuff
15. Mama Alligator
16. Me dancing around in nature
17. Me in the Spanish Moss

Helen Sierminski of Nola Sidewalk Gardens and Forests will be joining us for our community night at Sports Drink on September 9th at 8pm. Beforehand, we will be making sandwiches for the community fridges at 7pm. Please join us for both.

Helen is a certified Master Naturalist, a board member for the Native Plant Initiative of Greater New Orleans and an independent Community Liaison. It is her life's work to connect other's with nature in an urban setting. Helen guides Urban Nature Walks throughout New Orleans, inspiring others to be mindful & appreciate nature in our urban setting. She will be talking about accessing community resources and cultivating healthy ecosystems. Helen will display her community resources map, which highlights locations to drop off recycling and compost, community fridges, free stores, farmers markets, community gardens, bike fix it stations and more. This map is featured on the city's website. She will also offer information about how to access native plants, how to turn your concrete spaces into plant gardens, how to learn more about birds and other wildlife as well as several other community and ecosystem related topics. Join us this evening for a fun discussion about urban nature and community empowerment.

Carolina Mantis, native to North America. They prey on garden pests but also on garden friends such as bees and butterflies (such is the conundrum of life). Females may eat the male they are mating with during or after s*x.
This Mantis was found on the two trees that grow together in Couturie Forest (IYKYK). Couturie is a wonderful example of a true urban forest, a reprieve for humans and wildlife.

Native Purple Passionflower (Passiflora Incarnata) growing around the trunk of a Crepe Myrtle covered in Lichen. Trees are entire ecosystems, hosting so many other lifeforms. It is vital that we protect and respect them.

Have you ever tried to photograph the Moon? She's incredibly hard to capture because her light is reflected from the Sun and not her own. Many times I've gotten blurry, indistinguishable pics of the Moon. But when I do get a good picture, I feel blessed.
The Moon is the perfect bridge between the natural world and all things other worldly. She is studied by Astronomers and astrophysicists, worshipped by witches, and admired by many. We can use her to track the tides and plant our gardens. She is tangible and intangible at the same time. Always changing yet always constant.
What is your relationship with the Moon?

I started a Facebook group to facilitate this bird meetup. This is a group for anyone in Orleans Parish or the surrounding areas that loves birds and wants to spend time with other bird lovers. All levels of birding experience and knowledge are welcome. We will plan meet ups to go birding, to discuss birds, to share artwork about birds, to garden for birds and more. If you're interested in joining, please join here https://www.facebook.com/groups/1542190883415724/?ref=share&mibextid=NSMWBT
