If you’re considering a European river cruise, one of the BIG differences to understand is how shore excursions work with AmaWaterways vs. Viking.

🟢 AmaWaterways
AmaWaterways typically includes a choice of excursions in many ports — and that choice is one of the things I really like about them.

Depending on the destination, you may be able to choose between:
🚶 A classic walking or sightseeing tour
🥾 A more active hiking option
🚲 Guided bike tours on select itineraries
🍷 Food, wine or other special-interest experiences
👣 Different walking paces on some tours

The idea is that everyone doesn't necessarily have to experience the destination the exact same way.

🔴 Viking River Cruises
Viking also includes a shore excursion in almost every port, generally a guided sightseeing or walking tour designed to introduce you to the destination.

But Viking also offers optional excursions for an additional charge if you want to go beyond the included tour. These can include special experiences, more in-depth sightseeing, culinary experiences and trips farther outside the immediate port area.

💡 So what's the biggest difference?

AmaWaterways tends to give you more choices among included excursions, especially if you enjoy active options like biking or hiking.

Viking's model is generally one included introductory excursion in each port, with additional experiences available to purchase.

Neither is necessarily better for everyone — it depends on how YOU like to travel.

And this is exactly why I don't believe in recommending a river cruise based on price alone. The ship, itinerary, included excursions, activity level and what's actually included in your fare can make a HUGE difference in your vacation.

Hi,

My name is Scott Weber, and I’m the owner of Seas the Moment Travel, a gay-owned travel business here in the Tampa Bay area.

I’m currently organizing 🍹 G**s, Gals & Gallons of Margaritas, an LGBTQ+ group cruise sailing from Tampa aboard Margaritaville at Sea Islander on October 2, 2027.

One of the reasons I decided to put this group together is that I love the idea of LGBTQ+ travelers being able to cruise together and have that sense of community without necessarily paying the prices associated with a full-ship gay charter.

This isn't about taking over an entire ship. It's a regular cruise where LGBTQ+ travelers, couples, singles, friends and allies can vacation together, meet new people and participate in group activities while still having the freedom to enjoy their own vacation.

The 7-night cruise sails roundtrip from Tampa and visits Key West, Roatán, Belize City and Cozumel.

I'm currently building interest in the group, and I thought the concept might make an interesting local travel or community story—especially with Tampa having such a large and diverse LGBTQ+ community.

I'd be happy to provide additional information, photos, cruise details or speak with someone about why I'm putting the group together.

If you have an events calendar or community section where this would be a better fit, I'd also appreciate being pointed in the right direction.
