✨ In the Tunisian desert, between the salt flats of Chott El Djerid and Chott El Gharsa, stands Mos Espa—an abandoned film set built for Star Wars.

Constructed in the middle of nowhere to depict Anakin Skywalker’s hometown on the planet Tatooine (named after the nearby real-life town of Tataouine), the set includes over 20 structures—complete with “moisture vaporators” and iconic domed buildings.

Unlike CGI backdrops, this set is real—and still standing. But the Sahara is slowly reclaiming it, one dust storm at a time.

⏳ Join us in a galaxy far, far away and explore this surreal site for yourself, along with ancient ruins, a labyrinth of medinas, and much more!

🕥 Time travel, Venetian-style.

High above Piazza San Marco is one of Venice’s most fascinating treasures: St. Mark’s Clock Tower, a masterpiece of 15th-century engineering that tells time, tracks the moon, and reveals the zodiac. This astronomical clock has ticked through five centuries of Venice’s secrets and scandals—like the legend of the doge who had its creator blinded to ensure it could never be rivaled.

From its bronze “Moors” striking the original 1497 bell to the secret apartments once reserved for the tower’s caretakers, the Torre dell’Orologio is packed with stories.

☕️Sip Tea at 7,000 Feet—Where Tradition Meets Adventure! 🏔️

In Alberta’s Banff National Park, tea isn’t just a drink—it’s a ritual. Since 1905, the Lake Agnes Tea House has been serving hikers who trek up for a taste of the Rockies’ tea culture, brought over by Swiss guides in the early 1900s.

With 100 types of tea (like Bora Bora mango rooibos and 100 Monkeys white tea), all hauled up the mountain by hand, this spot offers a one-of-a-kind reward after the climb. And it’s not alone—Banff’s legendary teahouses are remnants of a golden age of railroads and mountain huts, where tea was as essential as the breathtaking views.

🏆 As featured in… Travel + Leisure’s 50 Best Places to Visit in 2025!

“Often overlooked by U.S. travelers, the comparatively small countries of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia will get some fresh attention in the year ahead, thanks to an innovative new itinerary from the tastemakers at Atlas Obscura. They’ve teamed up with the travel firm Intrepid to create a two-week swing through cities including Baku, Tbilisi, and Yerevan, as part of a series of small-group departures. Atlas Obscura is planning to open doors to wineries, bakeries, and crafts ateliers, and the tours will also visit historical sites, mosques, and churches such as Gergeti Trinity.” — Paul Brady

Surprisingly, Iceland grows some pretty fresh tomatoes…

Tomatoes are probably not the first thing one associates with Iceland, the land of fire and ice. But that’s exactly what Knútur Rafn Ármann and Helena Hermundardóttir, husband and wife owners of Fridheimar, specialize in growing. Along with their five children, Knútur and Helena have developed a family business devoted totally to tomatoes.

Through the use of geothermal technology, the greenhouses of Fridheimar, located one hour east of Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, produce 370 tons of tomatoes throughout the year. That’s roughly a ton per day—even in the coldest of Iceland’s winter months—and over 15% of Iceland’s tomato market.

This striking, two-toned confluence of rivers is visible from space.

One of the world’s waterier wonders is a two-toned confluence of two massive Amazon tributaries in Brazil. At the Meeting of Waters (Encontro das Águas) the dark waters of the aptly-named Rio Negro encounter the sandy upper Amazon, known as the Rio Solimões. Although the rivers converge, they do not mix. Instead, they snake stubbornly alongside each other for nearly four miles, forming a polychrome boundary that is visible from space.

Mongolian BBQ was developed in Taiwan as a twist on a Japanese-style stir-fry, but that doesn’t make it any less beloved by Mongolians.

A staple of the country’s nomads, the recipe’s essential elements are mutton and a metal milk container, which is commonly used as a cooking pot. After butchering a sheep, nomads stack mutton, potatoes, carrots, and cabbage among layers of heated rocks. Pouring water on the rocks steam-cooks the contents, and the hour-plus wait makes the food all the more welcome when it’s ready.

This lake village in Benin is considered Africa's “Venice on stilts.”

Runaway slaves and free natives formed communities outside of what is now Cotonou as a means of escaping Portuguese slavery. While there were few physical impediments protecting the ancestors of today's Ganvie village from outside attack, Fon religious practice forbade their raiders from advancing on any peoples dwelling on water, laying the groundwork for the Ganvie Lake Village.

Roughly 500 years later Ganvie has developed an intricate and prosperous culture within the constraints of life on the water.

The Portuguese francesinha looks like sin, tastes like heaven, and delivers a caloric hit that will keep you fueled for the rest of the day.

Your typical francesinha contains cured ham, steak, and linguiça (a Portuguese sausage) stashed between thick slices of bread, though other fillings such as turkey or tofu are also used. Coating the sandwich are layers of melted cheese and a secret sauce that contains beer, tomato, chilies, and, apparently, even more meat. If that’s not enough, you can add a runny egg on top and a side of french fries for dipping.

For centuries, a gold mine on the remote Sado Island was the powerhouse behind the Tokugawa Shogunate. And today you can take a self-guided tour through the old Edo Period tunnel complete with animatronic miners.

There’s nothing quite like walking through the dark tunnels and coming across a life-sized robotic miner peering out at you from the shadows. All part of the fun.

If you’re lucky, you can also snag some ice cream with gold flakes once back in the gift shop for a taste of the gleaming mineral.
