It is beyond doubt that traveling has become a status symbol in today's society. Many people feel that by traveling to popular destinations and sharing their experiences on social media, they are signaling their cultural sophistication and cosmopolitanism. In other words, traveling is the new orange!
However, this emphasis on traveling to popular destinations can cause people to miss out on a lot of the unique and authentic experiences such destinations can offer. When people focus solely on the "hot spots" and the places that are already popular, they may miss out on the chance to discover hidden gems, meet locals, and explore the true character of a place. And it's undoubtedly this is happening more and more. especially after the pandemic, as people are eager to show off their new regained high social status.
In addition, this mentality of "keeping up with the Joneses" when it comes to travel can contribute to a sense of anxiety and uncertainty. People may feel pressured to visit certain places in order to maintain their social status, which can lead to a sense of FOMO (fear of missing out) and a lack of personal fulfillment. In other words, either you go where everybody goes or you're a nobody!
The consequence of traveling like this is that people may end up with a superficial and unfulfilling experience. They may come home with a collection of empty, pre-packaged pictures and memories, rather than a deeper understanding and appreciation of the places they have visited.
An alternative approach to travel is to do what one really wants to do, and accept the consequences of being considered "weird" or outside the norm. By focusing on our own personal interests and passions, we can find unique and fulfilling experiences that truly resonate with us. This may mean exploring less popular destinations, trying out new activities, or simply taking the time to get to know the locals and learn about their culture.
In conclusion, while travel may be the new black, it's important to approach it in a way that is authentic and meaningful. By focusing on what we truly enjoy and being open to new experiences, we can create a travel experience that is truly fulfilling and rewarding.
