This past weekend, we set up „windy shop“ at the in Asbury Park!

Weather was perfect (if windy) and a great crowd came to visit us. Lots of friends stopped by, too - thanks for bringing various foods to try!

Special thanks to my hubby for tagging, dragging and driving!

What was your favorite bite? What do you wish you’d tasted?!

Crown Heights’s breakfast & lunch scene just got a great addition!

Nacha Focaccia isn’t your average focaccia spot - the team behind it merries everyone’s favorite Italian bread with global flavors from Japan to Mauritius.

While I’ve, so far, only tried their katsu (with fried tofu, cabbage slaw, cucumber salad and to tonkatsu sauce) and their strawberry matcha with cherry foam, I highly doubt you can make a bad choice here.

The space is inviting with ample seating, real greenery and, most importantly, super friendly staff who truly speak hospitality (where do you still find people like that?!)!

Do yourself a favor and pay them a visit!

As Austrians, we love bread and thankfully, you can now buy very good bread in NYC and Upstate.
Making it yourself from scratch isn’t particularly hard but takes time (a good week from scratch to finish), requires a scale and lots of flour!

I really enjoy the book “The Perfect Loaf”, which provides lots of details down to the nitty gritty.

When I decided to make my starter, I didn’t have a proper jar on hand, but this empty pasta sauce jar worked just fine (ideally, you’d use a wider-mouthed jar).

Feed, wait, measure, discard, repeat is the motto for days and once it’s time to bake your bread, you need more patience. If you don’t want to wait that long, I suggest a nice focaccia, for example (using commercial yeast, not “home grown” sourdough)

Have you made your own bread from scratch before? Give it a try sometime!

It’s Independent Bookstore Day, perfect reading weather! Here are some of my favorites!

Admittedly, I get most books from the library to save space and money but I love browsing bookstores and picking up a book here and there, cookbooks and travel guides in particular.

I love how more and more bookstores are popping up and not, as predicted years ago, closing!
Love & Legends is new and so is Wild Sorrel in the East Village, which I have yet to visit.

What’s your favorite bookstore?!

🥯 When visiting NYC, at least one morning should start with a bagel breakfast!

The go to way to order is to choose your bagel flavor/ seasoning - popular ones are everything (poppy, sesame, dried onion& garlic), poppy, plain, or sweet versions such as cinnamon-raisin and choose your cream cheese. Plain, scallion and veggie are most widely available.

🌱 Most bagel shops (not street vendors) offer at least one vegan cream cheese option, many offer a bunch. I would say that offers the biggest variety (including the vegan Beyond delight bagel on the cover) and some of the best bagels.

Generally, fresh bagels should not be toasted but the bagel police is usually not around :)

warning:
some places offer a tofu lox cream cheese, which is usually real lox (salt cured salmon), but some vegan places such as offer carrot lox!

GF: Most shops also sell gluten free bagels but double check that they don’t contain egg

Aside from Tompkins Square, my personal favorite is and my go-to order is a zaatar bagel with sun-dried tomato tofu cream cheese (just beware of slices of garlic in there).

For a very different take on a classic bagel, try a stuffed bagel from (get there early!) which sells bagels stuffed with Justegg and Impossible sausage)

If you want to learn how to make bagels or generally improve your bagel knowledge, book a tour with !

Whats your favorite bagel shop?
