Earlier this season, guide Nic Proust () led our Classic Escapes x University of Virginia () journey through Botswana and Victoria Falls.

Wildlife may bring us to places like these, but understanding keeps us engaged long after the journey ends. Throughout the expedition, guests explored not only the landscapes and wildlife of Botswana, but also the ecological and conservation stories that shape them.

From presentations on the Okavango while standing within the ecosystem itself, to conversations with conservation leaders working on the front lines of wildlife protection, every experience added another layer of understanding.

Because the most meaningful journeys don’t simply show you a place. They help you understand it.

Chapter 04 • Learning in the Wild 🌿

The best journeys combine exploration, curiosity, and shared discovery.
Every question opens the door to a deeper understanding of the landscape.

Conservation becomes personal when you meet the people doing the work.
Guests spent time with Dr. Chris Foggin, learning about anti-poaching efforts, wildlife protection, and the future of conservation in the region.

Any safari can show you wildlife. Understanding why it is there is where the real journey begins. 🐆🦍🦌🦒

You can spend $20,000 on safari and still miss the most important part.

Not the lions. Not the elephants. Not the gorillas. Not even the landscapes.

The most important part is the people working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure these places and species still exist at all.

The researchers tracking elephant migration corridors across East Africa.

The conservationists protecting Namibia’s desert-adapted black rhinos.

The veterinarians rehabilitating orphaned elephants and rhinos.

The educators inspiring the next generation of wildlife stewards.

The scientists safeguarding endangered mountain gorillas.

At Classic Escapes, we’re proud to work alongside organizations including , , , , , , and many others helping protect the wild places we love to explore.

The greatest wildlife experiences don’t happen by accident.
They exist because someone dedicated their life to protecting them.

The best part of European travel isn’t following the crowds. It’s finding the places that make you wonder, “How have I never heard of this before?!”

These 5 destinations have all the charm, beauty, culture, and unforgettable scenery of Europe’s most famous hotspots, without quite the same spotlight.

For now, at least.

Following extraordinary rainfall across the Makgadikgadi, Okavango and Chobe regions, landscapes were transformed and wildlife concentrated into smaller pockets of dry ground.
Earlier this season, guide Nic Proust () led our Classic Escapes x University of Virginia () journey through Botswana and Victoria Falls during this remarkable period of change.

One story stayed with us:
The tracks suggested lions were nearby. The landscape suggested otherwise. With 95% of Moremi underwater, opportunities to explore were limited, yet wildlife seemed to gather in the remaining islands of dry ground.

First leopard.
Then wild dog.
Then hyena.
Then, on the last morning, a king revealed himself.

To encounter leopard, wild dog, hyena and lion within such a small area was a powerful reminder of how dramatically the floodwaters have reshaped Botswana this year.

Chapter 02 • The Search for Lions 🦁

The tracks suggested lions were nearby. Instead, we found leopard.

With 95% of Moremi underwater, wildlife had been compressed into remarkably small pockets of dry ground, making every sighting feel hard-earned.

This young male was an unexpected reward.

Every safari has its moments between sightings. Stories around the fire. A chance to reflect on the day. And anticipation for what the next morning might bring.

Then, finally: Lion.

After days of tracks, clues, and anticipation, the search was over.

Botswana looks different this year.

Following some of the heaviest rainfall in living memory, landscapes across the Makgadikgadi, Okavango and Chobe regions have been transformed.

Guide Nic Proust () led our Classic Escapes x University of Virginia () journey through Botswana and Victoria Falls, earlier this season, and over the coming weeks we’ll be sharing notes from the field.

Wildlife. Ecosystems. Conservation. And the moments in between.

Chapter 01 • Flood Year 💧

Sunrise at Camp Xakanaxa overlooking the Okavango. One of the greatest wetlands on earth and already overflowing before the annual floodwaters from Angola have arrived.

Following extraordinary rainfall, landscapes typically dry remained underwater for months. Routes shifted, wildlife concentrated into smaller pockets of dry ground, and our guests experienced Botswana during an extraordinary season of change.

We ended where water becomes thunder. Victoria Falls in full force after one of the wettest periods in recent memory.

Retirement used to mean slowing down. More and more, it means finally taking the journeys that stayed on the list for years.

A safari at sunrise.
The Galápagos.
Antarctica.
Japan in autumn.
A long table in Tuscany.
Not because you’re finished.
Because you finally have time to travel differently.

Where would your next chapter begin? 🌿

We recently finalized a custom Tuscany itinerary for a client celebrating her 40th birthday 🍷🇮🇹

The vision was simple:
gather close friends + family in a private villa and create a week that felt beautiful, relaxed, and deeply memorable.

Think long dinners under the Tuscan sky, optional hot air balloon rides, beach days on the coast, Chianti escapes, truffle hunting, wine, slow mornings, and plenty of time to simply be together.

One thing we always try to prioritize when planning group journeys is flexibility. Some travelers want adventure. Others want pool days, long lunches, and downtime. The best itineraries leave room for both.

This is the kind of travel we love creating ✨
