The second day of our Eastern Long Island ride was just as fantastic as the first. A great breakfast (or coffee) was available from the campground store, and it had tables overlooking the water. The waterfront was a constant theme today, as I rode through Sag Harbor, North Haven and Shelter Island.

The ferry rides were super enjoyable, and the second one brought me to Greenport, where I was able to pick up lunch and eat it later next to a lighthouse.

I passed many delightful beaches today, so I budgeted in some beach time and the swim was refreshing!

I ended the ride in Riverhead, where a Long Island Railroad train was waiting to take me home. This whole trip, from start to finish, was 39 hours (including the train travel). But wow, it really felt like I was away from it all, even though the trip was relatively brief. That's the magic of bike touring! It's summer…which means it's time to bike the eastern end of Long Island! This beautiful region has a lot to offer cyclists, including super scenic roads with access to spectacular wide open beaches. And let's not forget the iconic Montauk Lighthouse, which is fantastic.

Unfortunately I only have 2 days available for this ride, but that's all you need for a great experience. Due to the distances involved, it is tempting to pile on the miles. But due to my short time frame I decided to take the train to Montauk and begin my ride at the station there, taking in the lighthouse and Camp Hero State Park first. Then I rode west, through the Hamptons, with its spectacular scenery and beautiful beaches. Every mile is beautiful and you can enjoy peaceful solitude at so many places along the route. (Which hopefully doesn't get interrupted by thumping music and party noise from passing yachts.)

The train ride was cheap, but everything else here is very expensive. I tried to bring whatever food I could from home to keep costs down. Fortunately there are ways to (legally) camp here for free. So that helps make the trip affordable, while biking through one of the wealthiest places on earth.

Get to know the Roosevelts on a bike tour of the Hudson Valley. You can visit the FDR Presidential Library in Hyde Park. There are also many other buildings, monuments, parks, etc. that are related to, or named after, Franklin or Eleanor.
