Well today is the day John Adams thought would be remembered as the Birthday of the USA. It was they day the Continental Congress actually voted to declare the Colonies independence from British rule. July 4th was the day they ratified some final wording adjustments. He wrote this letter to Abigail about the significance of July 2nd:

"I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more."

Adams would after come around to recognizing the 4th as the day of celebration and both he and Jefferson would choose that auspicious day to die.
