The Upbeat Path

The Upbeat Path Travel with me. Hi, we're Steph & Jimmy...

and we're so glad you've joined us on The Upbeat Path!

We're an American couple with a penchant - okay, maybe an obsession - for being on the go. It all started in 2015 when, shortly after starting to date, we decided to plan a 6-week trek through Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. Since then our wanderlust has only grown stronger, to the point of deciding to base our entire livelihood around travel. We've now been on countless bu

ses, planes, cars, and trains through Asia, South America, Europe, the Caribbean, and of course across our home country of the United States. We've come to realize that for us, the joy and mental presence that comes from experiencing a new corner of the world for the first time is 100% worth all the bumps in the road that come along with it. While our lifestyle may not be for everybody, we truly do hope that by sharing our adventures, the explorer in you wishes to step outside of their comfort zone and onto The Upbeat Path! Please follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter to keep up to date on our current adventures!

Located in the famous Old Quarter of Hanoi, Train Street is a one-of-a-kind thrill. Watch as locals go about their day and tourists sip coffee or bia on little stools surrounding the tracks - then as soon as the impending train sounds, stools and tables are packed away and everyone is shoved into the walls as to not get crushed by the training storming by!
Iโ€™ve lived in Hanoi for a year and canโ€™t believe it took me this long to see the train. Itโ€™s become a huge tourist attraction and the number of bars that popped up in the last year didnโ€™t exist when I was backpacking Vietnam.

Iโ€™ve been living in Hanoi for the past 8 months and think itโ€™s about time I start writing about it.

So what better topic to write about than food?! ๐Ÿฅข

Do you like Vietnamese food? Let me know your favorites in the comments!

When you think of Vietnamese food, what comes to mind first? Pho? Banh Mi? I thought so. And yeah, those are in fact quintessential Vietnamese recipes, but thereโ€™s so many more Vietnamese delicacies that you simply have to try from all over the country. And since Iโ€™m currently living in Hanoi

A few weeks ago I journeyed with some friends from Salzburg to the Germany border to visit Kรถnigsee, or Kings Lake. It was an absolutely gorgeous September day and we all stripped down to our bathing suits and jumped in the frigid clear water.

Did we freeze our bums off? Yes. Was it worth it? Absolutely!

Yesterday I visited Golan Heights, the area captured from Syria and occupied by Israel during the 6 Day War, which Israel effectively annexed in 1981.
It was a strange and depressing feeling, standing atop what was once a Syrian bunker and overlooking Syria's now nearly uninhabited cities, knowing that most Syrians live constant threat and fear as I can peer over their abandoned home in peace.
I pray all Syrians can find this same peace and safety one day soon.

Singapore was my first stop of my Southeast Asia adventure that started about four months ago. After over 24 hours of travel, I canโ€™t say I minded the lack of culture shock that Singapore (didnโ€™t) offer.
The uber-clean streets, incredible architecture, reliable public transit, delicious food and - my least favorite - Western pricing made me feel like I was in some utopia metropolis.
Seems like it was ages ago that I was in Singapore, but soon enough Iโ€™ll be back for my flight to the US. Itโ€™ll be bittersweet for sure. Have you been to Singapore?
