Who were the Kush*tes, and how much do we really know about their origins, civilization, and enduring legacy?

Join HAPI Talks for a powerful and thought-provoking conversation with Professor Manu Ampim, a tenured Professor of History and Africana Studies at Contra Costa College in San Pablo, California. Professor Ampim has conducted extensive original field research in the heartland of ancient Kush in East Africa, coined the term "Kushology," and is the author of A History of African Civilizations (2023).

Together, we will journey from the earliest documented references to Kush through ancient Egypt, Sudan, and into the modern world, examining the historical evidence and challenging conventional narratives about one of Africa's most significant civilizations.

We'll explore some critical questions:

When, where, and how did the term Kush first appear in historical records?

Was the name Kush used in ancient Egypt before the reign of King Kashta?

What role did the Kush*tes play in shaping the civilizations of ancient Egypt and Sudan?

What historical and cultural connections, if any, exist between the ancient Kush*tes and the peoples identified as Kush*tes in modern-day Ethiopia?

What can the study of Kush*te civilization teach us about African history, identity, and our understanding of ourselves today?
