Some of my favourite clients to plan river cruises for are the ones who have already done one.

They have done the Danube. Maybe the Rhine. They loved it and now they are asking me the question I genuinely enjoy answering: where do we go next that feels nothing like the last one.
My answer right now is Portugal. Specifically the Douro Valley. One of the oldest demarcated w**e regions in the world, with the river running straight through centuries of terraced vineyards. The quintas, the w**e estates, sit right above the water. A Douro river cruise puts you inside that landscape in a way that is completely unlike anything on the Rhine or the Danube.

I spent part of yesterday tasting through w**es from several of those estates at the Portugal Tourism Board event. The afternoon felt nothing like research. It felt exactly like the kind of experience a well-planned itinerary is supposed to deliver.

The scale is more intimate than the big European routes. The pace is different. The culture surrounds you rather than passing by. And for the traveller who has already been to Lisbon, Porto at the start or end of the itinerary adds a dimension to Portugal that most people never find on a first visit.

If you have already done a European river cruise and you are wondering where to go next, this is the conversation I have been waiting to have.

Two things I always pay close attention to when I am learning a destination: the food
and the w**e.

Not because every itinerary I build features a w**e tasting or a long lunch. But because
the way a place eats and drinks tells you something about who it is that no hotel
brochure will.

The food in Portugal’s North is deeply regional. Nothing trying to be something it is
not. The kind of meal that makes you realise you have been eating the tourist version
of food in other places for years without knowing it.

The w**es from the Douro Valley quintas, the estates that sit along the river, are a
completely different story from what most people think of when they think
Portuguese w**e. There is centuries of history in a single glass. And the experience of
tasting them at the source, on an afternoon that does not feel anything like work,
stays with you.

This is what I was doing yesterday. And this is the level of knowledge that goes into
every destination I recommend.

The difference between a good trip and one you are still talking about years later
usually lives in details like these.

There is a version of this job that looks like scrolling Pinterest and forwarding links.
That is not the version I want to do.

Yesterday I was at a Portugal Tourism Board event. Porto. The North. The Douro Valley
w**e region. In a room with the people who know that destination deeply. Asking
questions. Taking notes. Tasting w**es. Eating the food.

Three of my clients have asked about Portugal in the last few months. One wants a
honeymoon that feels different from every honeymoon she has seen on her feed. One
has been thinking about a river cruise for two years and keeps putting it off. One
wants to take his family somewhere that actually earns the occasion they are
celebrating.

Events like this one are part of how I stay close to the destinations my clients care
about. The knowledge I come away with lives in every conversation I have after, every
recommendation I make, every itinerary I put my name on.

That is the part of this work that does not show up on the grid. But it is the part that
changes everything about what your trip becomes.

Portugal on your radar? Drop it in the comments. More coming this week.
