And What Should You Put in Your Backpack? - The Singing Bowl
Sooner or later, every traveler returning from Nepal asks the same question: "What should I bring home?"
You can choose from countless options.
Prayer flags fluttering in the mountain wind.
Incense with mysterious Himalayan aromas.
Handmade crafts created by local artisans.
Buddhist symbols, paintings, jewelry, and countless other treasures.
I brought home two things. A Nepali kukri knife and a Singing Bowl.
The kukri deserves its own story, but first let me tell you about the bowl.
The first time I heard one being played, I was fascinated. The sound didn't seem to come from the bowl itself. It filled the entire room, vibrated in the air, lingered in the silence, and somehow made everything around it feel calmer and more alive.
Of course, I wanted one for myself.
As it turned out, choosing a Singing Bowl is not nearly as simple as buying a souvenir. At least for me.
There are factory-made bowls and handmade bowls. Large bowls and small bowls. Bowls made from different alloys and different traditions.
Some master craftsmen create bowls from five metals.
Others from seven.
And some from eleven metals.
Our group spent some hours visiting workshops and stores. One by one, everyone found their bowl. Everyone except me.
I kept searching. I wanted the bowl. Not the most expensive one. Not the largest one. Just the one that was mine.
One bowl sounded too bright.
Another sounded too quiet.
A third sounded somehow sad.
And then I picked up this bowl.
The moment it began to sing, I softly answered with a familiar sound: "Om Mani Padme Hum."
And something happened.
The room seemed to fill with an indescribable light.
The vibration of my voice merged with the vibration of the bowl, and together they became something far greater than either one alone.
In that moment I knew. This was my bowl.
Since then, it has been with me for many years.
I don't use it often.
Sometimes I simply brush against it while walking past, and a single note instantly awakens hundreds of memories from Nepal.
The mountains. The monasteries. The prayer flags. The people.
But there are other moments too.
Moments when life becomes difficult.
When something feels unfair.
When the path forward is unclear.
Then I take the bowl in my hands. And together we sing:
"Om Mani Padme Hum."
Somehow, it still works.
The vibrations pass through everything like a sieve, separating the important from the unimportant, the real from the temporary.
And what remains is clarity.
Just recently I experienced one of those moments — one of those situations that brings genuine pain.
The bowl and I sang together again.
And once again, everything slowly returned to its proper place.
Perhaps it is the sound. Perhaps it is memory. Perhaps it is something else entirely. I don't know.
What I do know is this:
If somewhere in Nepal there is a Singing Bowl waiting for you, you'll recognize it the moment you hear its voice.
Just as I recognized mine.
