At my fish store today, when I walked in, the fish monger said to me: you must try the oysters that we just got this morning from France... along with the fresh red shrimp! So, he prepared it for me with some lemon and pepper, and eccolo! The most amazing oyster I've ever had! So plump and fresh! When you are a faithful, frequent customer as I have been since I moved here last fall, it's a beautiful exchange.

San Giorgio slayed the dragon! Last evening we witnessed the procession in Ragusa Ibla for their patron saint and protector, Saint George. During our current Enchanting Sicily Tour, we are so fortunate to be here to take in the Ragusans' devotion.

When hosting a family heritage tour, I aim to recreate the feeling of "wow, this is familiar!?" I want my guests to recall the sensation of being in their grandmother's kitchen, like I remember feeling my first visit to Sicily in 1996. Images from my childhood flashed before my mind's eye - - the scent of peas and onions cooking on the stove and my curiosity about soda bottles filled with tomato sauce in my grandmother Lorenzina's Brooklyn kitchen. Americans with Sicilian heritage seek to reconnect with heartfelt memories of their ancestors. And rightfully so! The sensation of putting your hands in the dough and eating dishes made with fresh ingredients... of going to the butcher shop and the bread bakery... These moments are profound and conjure emotions that are often hard to describe. You feel then in your body. For me, they remind me of running errands with my grandmother. A happy sidekick I was! And for a father, bringing his adult daughters to Sicily - - moments like these that happened here in this village helped recall his cherished memories that he perhaps never had shared with them before, but today, around the table teaming with "housewife food" he could remember. And he did! And wow, how beautiful to witness! Thank you and for curating this day! It will be one etched in our guests hearts for years to come.

Traveling with mostly women, I decided to focus on a subject that warms my heart, that of Santa Lucia. We started with seeing the Caravaggio, painted in 1608, that recreates the moments surrounding her martyrdom. One of the things that has recently come into focus for me about this painting is the two women grieving. Look closely... I hadn’t seen them so clearly until I saw the recreation of the masterpiece -- the new mural on a building next to the Basilica of Santa Lucia al Sepolcro, where the painting is housed, in Siracusa. Women grieving (especially the Madonna Addolorata) is a timeless and significant theme in Sicily. Alongside it, the story of Santa Lucia’s life and death is one of fortitude and faith. She exemplified power and strength with grace. Her statue, which I’ve only ever seen in photos, was on display in the Chiesa di Santa Lucia alla Badia at the Piazza Duomo (For the annual May observation of her miracle.). Wow, it is stunning in person! Like fireworks! Silver and gold and regal! We ate lunch in the Antico Mercato and then went for some Cannolo Terapia (Cannoli Therapy) with the luminary Franco Neri at Pasticceria Alfio Neri. A rainbow guided us back to Taormina. Only magic! Thank you to for guiding us.

Aannnd... We're on the road! May is traditionally our busiest month of travel in Sicily (mid-September through October is a very close second), and it's proving true this year too. Our experience today was on Mount Etna: Crater walking and wine tasting with at . We learned about the terroir of this, Europe's largest, most active volcano and how the grapes cultivated and wines made here are so phenomenal. Oh, the views! Oh, the tastes and scents! How fabulous to walk in the ash and through the vines! What an amazing day! Thank you for hosting us and imparting your profound knowledge.

Feel like a royal when you walk through the Porta Reale or Ferdinandea of Noto. Constructed as a triumphal arch for the king's entry into the baroque city, the Porta Reale or Ferdinandea was commissioned and financed in 1838 by the Marquis of Cannicarao in anticipation of a visit to Noto by King Ferdinand II of Bourbon. This neoclassical gate made of the golden limestone employed for many of the UNESCO recognized churches, palaces, and roadways of the Val di Noto was designed by architect Orazio Angelici.

Of interest are the symbols decorating the arch: a stork that represents peace, happiness, and fertility; a tower that illustrates the strength and power of the city; a Sicilian greyhound dog communicating loyalty and fidelity. The wreath on the left displays wheat, representing abundance and fertility. The wreath on the right possesses a caduceus, the staff carried by the Hermes, the messenger of the ancient Greek gods, as a symbol of peace. Inside the archways are the coat of arms of the Cannicarao family and the city of Noto.

In Sicily, we call it the “White Lotus Effect.”

Many people ask if the second season of White Lotus impacted Experience Sicily's business. The answer is, “Yes!” Probably in more ways than you might imagine. Mostly though, it introduced Sicily to ten million people who did not know about the splendor of this island and its culture. The settings of Taormina, Cefalù, Palermo, and Noto piqued Americans’ curiosity to travel to another part of Italy, and that pleases me!

The series about wealthy Americans on vacation in glamorous places’ influence has reached further than travelling to Sicily. Rent.com recently asked me how one might use the Sicily season of White Lotus to inspire one’s home décor. Having designed two apartments in the New York area with a Sicilian aesthetic, this was a thrill to comment on! So, find your favorite lemon-printed table clothes, tile-inspired throw pillows, and traditional ceramics from Caltagirone or Santo Stefano di Camastra, and you are on your way. Read the full article at link in comments.

Meanwhile, for more recent television shows set in Sicily, check out The Lions of Sicily on Hulu and the latest series to join the list, The Leopard on Netflix. Both are period dramas including real historic events.
