When you are in the Neapolis Archaeological Park in Siracusa, there is more to see here than just the ancient Greek and Roman ruins. Pay attention too to the large pillar(s) that you’ll see in the Latomie del Paradiso on the way to The Ear of Dionysius cave. What exactly are these pillars? Well, think about the New York City subway. When in Manhattan, to take the trains (as we New Yorkers say), you go underground. You take stairs or an elevator and enter a whole other world of tunnels and train tracks and shops below. Meanwhile, above you is the bustling city with streets and cars and restaurants and … you get the idea. Well, that was true here too!

When you walk down the stairs and paths into the Latomie del Paradiso, or the Quarry of Paradise, you are descending into the ancient Siracusan underground. However, today, there’s no ceiling. No roof. No bustling city streets above ground. Get this: there was a bustling city until 1693! Archaeologists and historians will tell you that the massive 1693 earthquakes shook Siracusa and its surroundings so hard that the Neapolis (or New City) collapsed into the underground quarry. The pillar that you see pictured is what is left of the pillars that were keeping the above-ground city “afloat.” Look carefully at the top of the limestone pillar. Do you see an old house? That’s part of the old city that existed on top of the ancient limestone quarry. A ruin from the 1600s.

Now think about that for a moment.

I hope that shook you up a bit!

Now you know how massive the 1693 earthquakes were.

Isn't history cool?

May is my favorite time of year in Sicily. Exactly now! This is the sweet spot: from about 20 May to 7 June: The sun is warming up the air temperature (but not too much!), the crimson clover fields counter the green of the wheat fields, Etna's skies are clear each morning most of the days, and the turquoise sea is warming up enough to swim. So, if you are thinking of planning for 2027... Plan to come with me for Enchanting Sicily next May! Starting Sunday, you can follow this year's group to learn about the joys of traveling when we take care of all the details. This is living!

When I first came to Sicily (30 years ago!), I keep looking at the green hillsides and mountain-top villages from the autostrada wondering, "What's out there?" I wanted to see the ladies poking their heads out of their shutters, put my hiking boots on the dirt of in the wheat fields, and hear the fruit and vegetable vendor sing to local residents that he had the juiciest watermelon on the island. Now, since 2013, that's what we've been helping our clients do -- go off-the-beaten-path and experience the heart and soul of Sicily. Come with us, and together we'll discover undiscovered Sicily!

The Portale di San Giorgio or the Portal of Saint George is the only thing that remains of the gothic-style church of Saint George that existed in Ragusa Ibla before the 1693 earthquake. The original church was built in the early 1300s, then modified in the 1500s after it suffered damage from an earthquake in 1542. The massive earthquakes of 1693 finally destroyed the medieval temple of which this doorway was one of three entrances. Ragusans attribute its survival due to their devotion to San Giorgio, the town’s patron saint. The limestone lunette above the archway shows Saint George slaying a dragon with a woman in her dress, kneeling and witnessing the event that defines the saint’s story. The relief pictured illustrates the legend of San Giorgio, who is said to have saved a town from a menacing “dragon” that required daily sacrifices. This scene shows the king’s daughter, who was to be subject of the day’s sacrifice. The “dragon,” of course, is a metaphor for evil or a non-Christian entity.

Saint George grew up in the Middle East devoted to Jesus. The son of a nobleman who had served in the military, George was a well-respected leader in the Roman army until the tyrant Diocletian ordered him tortured and executed in 303 CE because he would not renounce his faith. Legend says that he at first only wounded the dragon and then killed it once the townspeople promised to convert to Christianity.

Saint Joseph is Sicily's Patron Saint.
He's a powerful protector,
the surrogate father of Jesus,
the patron of fathers, fatherhood, carpenters, and those who toil for their work, and the guardian of the hearth and home. Sicilians celebrate San Giuseppe with fervor! Join us on Sunday, March 22 in New York City for a culturally immersive luncheon to celebrate the saint and spring's arrival with a traditional menu, desserts, live music, and more.
