Yes we are following the news on the Hantavirus outbreak on the Cruise Ship MV Hondius offered under the company Ocean-Expeditions that offers cruise itineraries in Arctic, Antarctic, and Polar regions. None of our clients or customers were on this ship. If you book a cruise or travel with us we review your destination and see any health requirements or concerns that are needed to visit the area and advise our customers; we suggest to customers and clients companies we have used in the past that are known; and most important events and circumstances happen sometimes so we offer to our customers and clients travel insurance for inconvenience issues that can happen. Most important is research on the companies, and your itinerary. If you are going to go on that dream vacation costing thousands of dollars you need to prepare, and Travel Advisors help you do that.

Recent news of a Cruise Ship out break of a virus is filling the news channel of ship infections, passenger deaths, quarantine of passengers, denied port entry and further passenger illness. The most recent outbreak was on a Cruise Ship we know nothing about. There is no guarantee that the same thing could not happen on any cruise ship, but there are things we advise our customers do. We advise our clients consider when booking a cruise; select a well known cruise company and target the newer Cruise Ships and always, always get travel insurance we offer. The newer the cruise ship, the less problems with infections. The better and bigger the the cruise line the better the health standards. One evening we were invited to the Captains table for dinner on a cruise we were on of a well known cruise line. The Captain told us of how just prior to our cruise they dis-infected the entire ship after their health officer noted that one family who were passengers were very dirty and unhealthy. All rooms, public areas, hallways, kitchens, general public areas, and crew areas were completely dis-infected and cleaned before passengers and personal luggage were loaded before the next cruise. All for one family that had poor hygiene, was noted by the Health Officer and reacted by disinfecting the ship. This is why we participate in ship inspections, participated in seminars, conferences, and why our team go on cruises to check on the quality and safety.

We get the questions often, “Hey, why are there no “US registered Cruise Ships”? Actually there is one, and only one. The only US registered Cruise Ship is the Norwegian Cruise LIne’s “Pride of America”. It is the only one since it visits all of the major Hawaiian ports in Hawaii and departs out of Honolulu and returns after a 7 day cruise around the Islands. By law its crew and the ship must be American and the ship registered as a US ship. Since other cruise ships visit ports world wide they are registered to other countries, often registered in the Bahamas and are allowed foreign crews. This ship “Pride of Hawaii” is a great way to see most all the islands and the high light for us was when the ship stopped just offshore of the lava flows, AT NIGHT. It was spectacular watching the volcanic flows glow bright orange as they splashed steaming into the ocean. The Captain made three perfect 360 degree turns while stopped just offshore of the lava flows to allow everyone a view. Cameras were busy that night.

All, we are still on hold for suggesting a visit to Mexico until we feel good about the tone of the country and everyone who goes is safe. We were successful in getting all of our clients home safely with the turmoil that unfolded months ago in Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta. In the interim, cruise season is in full swing and suggest that as an alternative to look at a summer cruise in Alaska. Summer is nearly here and last minute cruise ship bookings on the choice of your cruise ship and destination is still possible, but that window is closing fast with bookings coming in. We suggest to consider Alaska cruise which is now open.
