Warchal Strings of Slovakia is proud to introduce the first recycled strings!

String recycling has been an interesting project since 2012. Warchal has been encouraging dealers and players to return their used strings for recycling. They took things a step further than proper disposal and perfected a process of turning used strings back into useable strings!

Thanks to you, we can now introduce a unique although limited series of strings: Phoenix 2020.

Rising from the ashes to play once again the aptly named Phoenix strings utilize knowledge from Warchal’s entire history of string making to bring state-of-the-art tone quality and playability. They offer a warm, but textured and well-balanced projective sound.

While we’re generally not mysterious or mystical we can’t help but imagine that the molecules contained within these strings have already vibrated in the most prestigious concert halls worldwide evoking emotions from beautiful music played around the world. Bach’s solo sonatas as well as Mahler’s symphonies have been played with them. Perhaps your next recital too?

Thanks to my friend Elizabeth Marshall for trying out the BEST performance mutes available and for helping her string playing friends become aware of them!

While they clearly have the cool-factor going for them these mutes are designed to apply a muting effect while maintaining your instruments’ character and tonal nuance not just covering the sound as you get with a solid chunk of rubber.

These are performance mutes and offer sound qualities parallel to what composers heard in their minds when writing pieces with muting as we’re certain they didn’t just want to cover the sound! The secret is an internal honeycomb matrix which allows more tone to be preserved when compared with a traditional mute designs. Unique acoustical engineering led to the honeycomb matrix being 3D printed into a flexible synthetic material.

There are two varieties and several styles within each design: The original 3D-Sound version and the newer, more flexible Prizma version.

3D models come in solid colors and are denser, a bit more rigid and generally apply a greater muting effect.

Prizma models come in unique colors and, just like the musicians who play them, no two are exactly alike. While 3D Sound models come in Dual-Tone, Disc and Viol-Shaped styles, the Prizma line offers an additional style, a Square design which, especially on cello, can assist with Wolf-tones on occasion.

Also available is a Practice mute called the Catrpilr which has very strong magnets embedded into the flexible Prizma material allowing musicians to practice with maximum muting. They install flush on the bridge so an added advantage is that you can close the case with the mute still on the bridge.

When a product comes along that is this good, so well made and so purposefully designed it’s intriguing. When you get to see the growth building like a snowball rolling downhill it’s exciting.
