Kira K Designs Knitting and crochet patterns from Kira K Designs present a streamlined aesthetic featuring clean lines and interesting details. Hello!

Kits featuring indie dyed yarn make it easy to complete a successful project, and Kira teaches in the SF Bay Area and beyond. My name is Kira Dulaney and I have been designing knitting and crochet patterns since 2006, and selling kits since 2011. My kits pair my original patterns with beautiful hand-dyed yarns from a variety of indie dyers. When I design a new pattern, I start with a yarn that I l

ove and then figure out how to show it to its best advantage - for me it all starts with amazing yarn! Kira K Designs patterns have a streamlined and eminently wearable aesthetic, and with over one hundred knitting and crochet designs in a range of skill levels, you’re sure to find a garment or accessory that you’ll love to create. Kits with indie dyed yarn and any necessary notions make it even easier to knit or crochet a successful and stunning project. I have been teaching fiber arts classes and hosting crafty events in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond since 2002. I grew up exploring various crafts and sharing skills with friends, and worked in both a fabric shop and a yarn shop which inspired me to try new techniques and experiment with all kinds of projects. I love collaborating with other crafty small business owners, teaching new skills to students, and bringing groups to visit my favorite yarn shops and fiber farms. You can also connect on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Ravelry, and feel free to tag in any posts about projects made with my designs. I live in Oakland with my wife and two dogs, all of whom cameo on social media posts from time to time. https://linktr.ee/kirakdesigns

I’m working on a Bayshore Shawl, related to my recent Bayshore Bandana Cowl but a different shape and with smaller yarn. The fabric has a lovely feel and the subtle color shifts are fun to watch appear.

Rachel and I knit a few rounds while waiting for brunch at this morning. I’m knitting a sock with self striping yarn and Rachel is working on one with which she got to show to the dyer when we stopped by yesterday.

Understory’s new location on International Blvd in Oakland is even nicer than the last one. It’s a worker owned co-op with amazing food inspired by the various cultures of the owners - the current menu has a strong Filipino influence. It’s omni but there are always some vegan and GF options and it’s fun to get the chef’s collective meal for two which has small amounts of various dishes. We are stuffed but took home a slice of vegan cheesecake for later.

I’m excited to use their weekday cafe and co-working time for some private lessons in the future.

Thank you for the love shown to my new pattern, the Dappled Light Bandana Cowl. Edgings are so important in a polished piece, and this design uses a new favorite, the Channel Islands Bind Off.

It’s a variation of a picot bind off and neater than any I’ve tried before. It’s not hard to do, and I made a video to walk you through it. Another video shows the Coat Tweed stitch pattern, a slip stitch mosaic that becomes easy to follow by eye after a few repeats.

Use the code “mosaic” to get 20% off this pattern on my website or Ravelry through Monday.

Please welcome the Dappled Light Bandana Cowl. Embrace texture with this fun asymmetric mosaic bandana cowl, perfect for popping over your head for a little extra warmth. Whether you’re doing farm chores or walking on the beach, it’s a pocket-size accessory that does an impressive job keeping you cozy. The slip stitch mosaic pattern is easy to follow by eye after a few repeats especially with highly contrasting colors. You’ll love the unusual Channel Islands bind off technique! I recorded a video to show the main stitch pattern, and another for the bind off.

This pattern is available on my website and on Ravelry, both with a 20% discount through Monday evening with the code “mosaic”.

The pale green and white cowl was knit with Timm Ranch wool blend yarn, a bouncy two ply that’s a joy to work with. The jade and purple cowl was knit with Harmony yak/merino yarn and some of my handspun.

A big thank you to my friend Vanessa of for helping to name the pattern - you may know her as a helper in the booth at events.

I finally had a chance to take a photo with this adorable rainbow yarn bomb by in Berkeley.

I’m wearing a shirt in honor of our Volunteer Engagement Event tonight.

If you’re interested in volunteering and have some questions or just want more information about what we are looking for, please join us on Zoom tonight at 7 PM Pacific, and/or fill out the volunteer form on the Lambtown Festival website. It’s my favorite event of the year and we haven’t had nearly enough volunteers for the past few years. Just a few hours of help on festival week gets you admission, a t-shirt, and other gifts, or participate more by being a coordinator or assistant on a larger project.

Are you wondering which yarn to use as the main color in your Bayshore Bandana Cowl? I made a “pair” swapping placement of main color and contrast color and as you can see it makes quite a difference!

The main color shows more throughout and is featured in the crab stitch edging, while the contrast color looks like dots between the eyelets. I love both versions!

Yarns are Cormo Sport in Eldritch (main color in first photo) and Entropy DK in Tide Pool (main color in second photo).

If you’ve been eyeing this cowl but would prefer to knit something similar, I’ll have an exciting announcement tomorrow! And if you’ve been wanting a shawl version of this design, that’s in the works too.

I had a wonderful day hosting a retreat at yesterday. It was an especially fun and friendly group of people. Highlights of the day were snuggling small lambs and feeding lunch to bottle baby Sparky, but we also petted Jade, looked at fleece, asked rancher Robin a ton of questions, and crafted with a background of sheepy sounds.

i’ll be heading back on May 3 and have just a few spots open, and I also have a visit to on May 17 with a bit more space. I love bringing people out to meet the sheep and people behind what often become their new favorite yarns.

04/13/2025

A highlight of my retreat at Meridian Jacobs ranch today was a second trip out to the barn to deliver lunch to Sparky. She was born smaller than her two siblings and was found barely breathing and very cold. Rancher Robin warmed her up in some hot water then bottle fed her colostrum from her mama after which she perked up. Unfortunately, the ewe didn’t accept Sparky back, so now she’s a bottle baby.

You can read the full story and see more photos from Sparky‘s birthday on Robin‘s blog linked below. I’ll post more tomorrow about the rest of the retreat and I’m excited to head back for another one in just a few weeks. There are a few more ewes due to lamb before then, so although I hope for Robin’s sake there are no more bottle babies, I think we’ll still get some cuddle time with the little ones.

Don’t you just love the possibilities in freshly wound yarn?

These beauties from and will hopefully become a Bayshore Shawl prototype - a pattern related to my recent Bayshore Bandana Cowl. The stitch patterns will be the same, but this is a finer weight and will include decreases as well as increases. Now it’s time to swatch to decide on hook size and decrease technique!

I've been busy planning the workshops for Lambtown Festival, a volunteer run non-profit fiber festival that's been my favorite event for many years. I joined the board of directors just over six years ago and it's been so rewarding to watch the festival grow and improve. Tonight we are holding the first of four volunteer info sessions to help explain what's needed and place folks in coordinator, assistant, and volunteer roles. There are a variety of tasks and commitment levels, and we need dozens of volunteers, and there are sheepy projects, wooly tasks, people-facing positions, and even a few air conditioned jobs! I'm personally looking for some folks to help with the paperwork (contracts, product listings, class rosters) over the next few months, and to help greet and direct students during the festival itself in October.

Lambtown Festival would not be possible without a legion of volunteers - both during festival weekend and throughout the year. Even a few hours during Festival weekend can make a big difference!

Want to learn more? We are excited to invite you to four upcoming zoom events where you can connect with some of our Board of Directors and explore volunteering opportunities. Each session offers a chance to see how you can make an impact and help us serve our mission of celebrating all things sheep, lamb, and wool. Mark your calendar for these dates and use the link on our Volunteer page to join the meeting:
