Fun Fact Friday!

Have you ever wondered how toning happens on a coin?

Toning forms over time when the metal on the surface of a coin reacts with its surroundings. Exposure to air, humidity, sulfur, heat, and certain storage materials can all play a role. As that surface changes, different colors can begin to appear — sometimes light and subtle, and sometimes bold and dramatic.

That’s part of what makes toned coins so interesting: no two seem to age exactly the same way.

Do you prefer white coins or toned coins? Visit our website to browse more coins, and let us know your answer in the comments.

Our Coin of the Week is here.

This is the piece we’re putting front and center this week — a coin we felt was worth highlighting all on its own. Some coins just deserve the spotlight. This 1944 Walking Liberty Half Dollar, PCGS MS67 CAC is one of those. While not a tough coin by any means, it is scarce in 67 and above. And this one sure is a beaut!

Fun Fact Friday!

One of the more interesting Flying Eagle Cent varieties is the 1857 die clash with a Seated Liberty Half Dollar. A die clash happens when dies strike each other without a planchet between them, leaving design elements impressed into the dies themselves. When those dies continue to strike coins, those marks can show up on the finished piece.

In this case, the clash is seen on the obverse of the Flying Eagle Cent, with the most noticeable marks running through AMERICA. Collectors often consider this one of the better-known and more collectible multi-denominational clashes in the series, and some sources note it is among the easier Flying Eagle clashes to detect.

Here’s our Coin of the Week!

We’re putting this 1861 Jefferson Davis Death to Traitors Token, PCGS AU53 in the spotlight this week, and it’s one we thought deserved a little extra attention. We always enjoy featuring a piece that stands out from the crowd. This token is a very interesting Civil War collectable that is scarce and highly sought after. The token itself is quite nice as well!
