College is a strange season.

More freedom, more voices competing for your attention, more responsibility for deciding what you actually believe.

For many young Muslims, questions about faith, identity and purpose become much more real during these years.

Bayan Roots was built with that in mind.

Not to hand students a list of answers, but to give them access to scholarship, sacred spaces, thoughtful teachers and a cohort where serious questions are welcome.

Applications for the inaugural cohort are open now.

Early decision application deadline is Oct. 18.

For more than two decades, Adeyinka Muhammad Mendes has worked with Muslims around questions of spiritual formation, leadership, family, and community.

His work draws from classical Islamic scholarship, the Qur'an and Prophetic tradition, and Black Muslim intellectual traditions. He is also the founder of the Hero's Journey Umrah & Rites of Passage Leadership Program.

That experience feels especially relevant to Bayan Roots.

This is a journey for young Muslim men at a formative point in their lives, traveling through sacred places with scholars who understand that growth happens through conversation, reflection, worship, challenge, and good company.

Shaykh Mendes will accompany the inaugural cohort this December.

Applications close November 8.

Faith, identity, relationships, uncertainty, purpose. The questions that surface during college touch every part of a young person's life.

That is part of what Dr. Omar Mendoza Mahmood brings to Bayan Roots.

A clinical psychologist and educator, Dr. Mahmood has spent his career working at the intersection of psychology, human development, and Muslim life. He regularly speaks about mental health, brain development, and psychology from an Islamic perspective.

On Bayan Roots, those conversations will not be confined to a classroom.
Dr. Mahmood will travel alongside the cohort through Madinah, Makkah, and Istanbul, creating space for students to think more deeply about faith, growth, and the people they are becoming.

Early decision deadline: October 18, 2026

For most members of the Bayan Roots cohort, this will be their first Umrah.

They will arrive in Madinah together, spend time learning from the seerah and visiting historical sites, then travel to Makkah to perform Umrah with scholars guiding them through the meaning of what they are doing.

There will also be time to slow down.

To make du'a, to reflect, to think about where you are and where you want to go from here.

The Bayan Roots journey begins December 15.

Applications are open to Muslim college men.

Twenty young men. A shared journey through Madinah, Makkah and Istanbul. Scholars traveling alongside them from beginning to end.

Bayan Roots is intentionally small because who you travel with matters.

Questions continue over dinner. A lesson at a sacred site follows you back to the hotel. Someone you met days ago becomes the person you're talking with late into the night about faith, school, family and what comes next.

The cohort is part of the experience.
