James D Rogers Builder James D. Rogers Builder translates compelling architectural ideas into distinctive homes throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.

James D Rogers Builder, a residential construction company, specializes in building upscale new homes, residential remodels and additions in the San Francisco Bay Area. With over thirty years of construction experience, our thoughtful and thorough practice achieves your vision with clarity and skill. Our varied portfolio favors not one architectural style instead incorporating a hybrid of influenc

es ranging from classical to contemporary with an emphasis on quality, schedule and the architectural vision. As a small business, we extend the senior management service of a larger company to all our projects but with the lower cost, personal accountability and agility of a small builder. Working with skilled network of fully licensed and insured sub-contractors for years allows us to maintain well-managed projects from architectural drawings through completion of construction. Our clients get the best of both worlds in a small and responsive, but also expertly connected, coherent and trustworthy company. Responsive, energetic and loyal, our people bring their best to what we build together, because we value their expertise, engage their creativity and cultivate their partnership over the long term. You’ll work directly with James, but you can count on his entire team throughout the project. Our ultimate desire is to be associated with both compelling architecture and the finest of craftsmanship. That, we believe enhances the construction experience for our clients, our architects and ourselves.

Our client moved to an Orinda ridge top a few doors away from her daughter and three granddaughters to become part their everyday lives. Rather than renovate the existing 1970’s structure, we recycled it down to the foundation to build a hacienda of her dreams and bring to life memories from her past. Taking the original structure down to the foundation saved both time and money, and let architect Fred Hyer to perfectly blend Mediterranean and Mexican architecture that resonated more strongly and complemented the owner’s Spanish heritage and Nicaraguan childhood. Hand-made copper flashing roof tiles and intergal color stucco set off the exterior while a handmade distressed Guatemalan door invites you into a home with high, large-beamed ceilings, custom wrought iron chandeliers and fir decking. Formality meets intimacy in this elegant family sanctuary celebrating a perfect combination of past, present and future living.

Retiring from careers in aerospace, engineering and medicine to a 15-acre hilltop in Lafayette encircled by oaks and vistas, we built the owners an updated 21st century craftsman bungalow designed by Richard Bartlett in the handmade tradition of the Greene Brothers of the early 1900’s. The exterior of the home combines Western red cedar, copper trim and stone, as graceful in impression as the Chinese antiques and English botanical prints arrayed inside. Metal-clad Douglas fir doors and windows frame streams of sun, enhanced by state-of-the-art lighting and window treatments that blend outdoor and indoor, nature and technique. Remote enough to require a quarter-mile driveway, power for this secluded spot comes from a solar electric farm, while a solar thermal system heats water on-site and warms the spa, pool and radiant floors.

Contemporary masterpiece at one with the natural environment. Custom built for a renowned designer/writer and a textile artist, this residence sits on 17 acres in Woodside, California, with soaring walls of glass and open floor plan. Featured in Dwell Magazine, the galvanized aluminum roof overhangs the cinder block and redwood siding home creating a modern mixture of building materials. The interior is cleverly divided by a center hallway to separate living space from workspace in an overall unique architectural edge with a hint of Eichler.

This cluster of four Salt Box buildings on a secluded stretch of Happy Valley Creek mimics a New England small village in the woods. Using time-honored methods, cedar shingles were laid individually on the exterior. The oversized residence is trimmed in true divided light windows and doors. A great room with vaulted paneled ceiling combines the kitchen and living area to gather the family at the core of the house while enclosed corridors run to the three separate wings of the sleeping quarters, dining room and garage.

After 15 years in their 1970’s suburban ranch house, our clients requested a complete remodel. As landscape designers, gourmands and artifact collectors, they wanted an open floor plan with room to cook, custom cabinetry to display their eclectic collections and abundance of exterior interludes. We created a new structural logic, replacing the two-story western wall with four glass doors that opened up the living room and double-island kitchen (including wood burning oven and beverage station) to a view of the valley. The warm contemporary palette of natural wood, stone and acid washed steel brought together with Interior Designer Applegate Tran’s contemporary vision made for an open space ideal for family gatherings and entertaining.

As architect, designer and builder, we rebuilt a 1949 ranch house into an approachable and more functional 21st century California hacienda. From the street, a glimpse of the residence peeks invitingly through pine trees. Artfully rusted wrought-iron gates yield to mossy garden walks of antique brick that wind past purposely cracked stucco walls and grayed woodwork to a recycled front door, evoking a long history in place. A paved courtyard surrounds the residence allowing nature to be just steps away.
