Husbands, understanding your wife’s needs is like memorizing the owner’s manual of your dream car or knowing the cheat code to your favorite game. A wife’s needs are not as complicated or as hard to understand as you might think. Check out the “Top 7 Needs of a Wife” below and implement something that stands out to you this week.
Wives, do you agree? What would you add to this list?

1. Love - Apart from your relationship with God, your wife wants to know she is loved above all else (including your work, hobbies, friends, family, and even the children). Be sure your loving words match your actions.

2. Attention - Wives want to be heard AND listened to. You are the primary person with whom she would like to share her thoughts and concerns. Be her sounding board, with or without giving advice.

3. Protection - Wives want their husbands to be her defender. This means shielding her from physical danger. However, it also means keeping her safe from outside forces that might threaten her emotional wellbeing, your marriage, and family. Your wife needs you take ownership in leading your family.

4. Security/Commitment - Your wife needs to be certain that you will be there forever. Make sure she knows you will always be faithful. Can she trust you? Do your actions help support her confidence?

5. Appreciation/Value - Your wife wants to be cherished for both who she is and what she does. Acknowledge her and let her know you value the things she does for you, your family and your household. Compliment her efforts. Tell her she’s beautiful. Genuinely and regularly let her know what you admire about her.

6. Compassion - Men and women are different.
Women will respond differently to situations, perhaps with more emotion. Allow her to process in her own way. Also, wives want a little romance in the marriage. Be kind, loving, and occasionally romantic. Just trying goes a long way.

7. Partnership - No wife wants to do life alone. She wants her husband's participation in raising the kids, making decisions for your home and, yes, sometimes even helping her pick out her outfit. Your wife wants to do life together, not just cohabitation, living two separate lives in the same household.

Use your manual and cheat code. Though you may not do it perfectly, try honoring your wife’s needs and become one more everyday.

Why did I get married? That’s a question many of us have asked from time to time in our marriage. Sometimes that question is fueled by life’s frustrations, momentary feelings of incompatibility or maybe being misunderstood. When doubt separates you, communication is the glue that brings you back together. When your spouse speaks… Listen. Ask your spouse how you can support them in what they’ve shared or maybe what response they need from you. Be willing to listen with your defenses down and try to see things from their side. Figure out where you can meet in the middle. Compromise. Always remember that your spouse is not your enemy, they are your battle partner. Listen and let their heart speak to yours.
