☀️ Current mood: June ☀️

Basking in the sunshine, listening to the waves, and hiding under a beached catamaran like it’s my own private mermaid cabana. 🧜‍♀️⛵

What’s your current June mood? ⚓️

A reminder to anyone visiting this location:
We followed the local sheriff’s order of NO boarding the boat — including sitting or climbing on it. The vessel is under no trespassing restrictions, and violating them is a fineable offense.

As members of the mermaid and coastal photography community, we have the opportunity to lead by example: respect the boat rules (even if it means not getting that “perfect” shot), protect the dunes, and help preserve these magical places so others can continue to enjoy them responsibly for years to come. 🌾🧜‍♀️✨

Sometimes it’s just inevitable with curious kiddos, they’ll just keep following the mermaid around. So, they sometimes end up in the background…😂🤣😂🤣💀💀💀

MerMay Day 31: Sunset 🌅🧜‍♀️

As the sun sets on another MerMay, I find myself looking toward the lighthouse.

Lighthouses don’t chase ships. They don’t compete with the stars. They don’t dim themselves because a storm rolls in. They simply stand firm, shining the light they were built to shine.

This month has been a reminder that we all face rough seas, changing tides, and moments when the horizon feels uncertain. But like a lighthouse, our purpose isn’t to control the ocean around us—it’s to remain true to who we are, even when the waters get dark.

MerMay has brought me creativity, adventure, laughter, friendships, and countless moments of wonder. From springs and shores to shipwrecks and sunsets, each day has been a reminder of why I fell in love with the mermaid world in the first place: not because life is always calm, but because there is beauty worth seeking even when the tides change.

As this year’s MerMay slips beneath the horizon, I’m grateful for every person who followed along, encouraged me, collaborated with me, or simply shared a little ocean magic along the way.

The sunset may mark the end of MerMay, but the light doesn’t disappear. It simply continues shining into a new day.

So wherever life carries you next, stay true to your light. Someone out there may need it to find their way home. ✨🌊🧜‍♀️

Fun lighthouse fact: A lighthouse’s beam can often be seen for 15–25 miles or more, depending on its height and weather conditions. Just like kindness, courage, and authenticity, a single light can reach farther than we realize.

🩰🧜‍♀️ MerMay Day 30: Dancing 🧜‍♀️🩰

Today I attempted to perform ballet at Orlando Wetlands Park.

Attempted.

In my imagination, I was a graceful water nymph floating effortlessly across the landscape, birds circling overhead in perfect formation while alligators swayed rhythmically to the music.

In reality, I was a mermaid in tennis shoes trying to do ballet on uneven ground while a heron stared at me with visible concern.

The birds declined to join the performance.
The alligators remained harsh critics.
My hips filed a formal complaint.

It turns out ballet is significantly harder when:
• You are not on a stage.
• You are wearing tennis shoes.
• The ground has the consistency of “Florida.”
• You are no longer 22.

Despite my failed audition for “Swan Lake: Wetlands Edition,” I couldn’t have picked a better place to spend the day.

Florida’s wetlands are some of the most important ecosystems in the state. They act like giant natural sponges, absorbing floodwaters during heavy rains and slowly releasing water back into rivers, lakes, and underground aquifers. Wetlands also help filter pollutants from the water, improve water quality, and provide critical habitat for countless species of birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals.

Places like Orlando Wetlands Park are home to an incredible diversity of wildlife, including wading birds, otters, turtles, alligators, and migratory species that depend on these habitats for survival. Healthy wetlands also help protect communities from flooding and support the overall health of Florida’s water systems.

So while my ballet career may have ended before intermission, I gained a renewed appreciation for these beautiful wetlands and the wildlife that call them home.

The alligators may not have danced with me…

But they definitely judged my technique. 🐊💃

Just keep dancing anyways. 💕

The underwater world is beautiful… but the real world beneath Florida’s surface is fragile. 💙🌊

Beneath our springs, rivers, and coastlines lies the Floridan Aquifer — one of the largest freshwater aquifer systems in the world and the source of most of Florida’s drinking water. But aquifers are not endless. They recharge slowly through rainfall, and when too much freshwater is withdrawn, water tables can drop dangerously low. In coastal areas, that pressure loss allows saltwater intrusion — where seawater pushes into freshwater zones, contaminating wells and threatening ecosystems. Scientists have documented saltwater intrusion across multiple regions of Florida, worsened by over-pumping, drought, sea-level rise, and rapid development.

Florida’s springs, wetlands, dunes, marshes, and aquifers are deeply connected. What happens underground eventually reaches the surface. Protecting our waters means conserving them, respecting recharge areas, supporting responsible growth, and remembering that even the clearest spring is part of a delicate balance.

For MerMay Day 29: Underwater, I wanted to celebrate the beauty beneath the surface — while also honoring how vulnerable it truly is. The magic of Florida’s waters only survives if we protect the unseen world below them. 🫧✨
