We watched The Green Book last night.
I showed my kids this photo from our 2019 visit to The King Center in Atlanta, GA.

She immediately zoomed to the jelly beans and said

“Wait… you had to guess to vote?”
Yep.

That’s why we travel like this.
They don’t always get it then, but one day… it clicks.

The timing though?!

Just a reminder that your vote matters. They wouldn't work so hard to silence it if it didn't.

I wound up in Hilton Head this week on an impromptu trip due to a family emergency.

Had time to wander afterwards so I went to Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park, the first self governed town in the US founded by formerly enslaved people.

Passed by Cotton Hope Plantation, a little community that made me say wow, they love holding onto those plantation names.

A quick Google search found 2 versions of history...
A site that claims slaves unknown. 🧐
And a site that shows 128 slaves recorded.

His. Story. Always seems to have selective remembrance. So we ask, who does that benefit?

There's a version of me that used to think a good day had to be planned. I didn't want to miss a single thing.
Then there's this version...
Walking between lakeside paths and wild trails, kids laughing at absolutely nothing, hoping to see a big gator but also hoping to NOT see one, and me knowing this all counts too.
