Saw a post flying through the internet about Wurtsmith Airforce Base with some historical reference. Here is the text from the cup, which must have been produced just before closure given the last sentence on the cup of the forward looking date to when the base “closes” versus “closed.”

WURTSMITH AIR FORCE BASE
“On 4 July 1953, Wurtsmith AFB was named in honor of Maj. General Paul B. Wurtsmith, a Detroit native and a World War II hero. Wurtsmith became a Strategic Air Command (SAC) base in April 1960. On 6 June 1961, the 379th Bombardment Wing received SAC's first B-52H bomber. The Wing flew extensive missions in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam conflict and in Operation Desert Storm in 1991. During Desert Storm the 379th Bombardment Wing flew 846 Bomber missions, 680 Tanker missions, and dropped 20% of all bombs that were dropped by coalition forces. As of 1 June 1992, SAC was deactivated and became a part of the Air Combat Command. The base officially closes on 30 June 1993.”

Speaking of Lake Huron Beaches today, there is some talk that over 50 percent of Lake is frozen over now and it could get to just over 80 percent frozen in the coming days. Does anyone remember when the lake was frozen at 98 percent in recent years?

Of all the Lake Huron Beaches we believe the three best Lake Huron Beaches are our Downtown Beach Park, which has improvements approved in the near future, Three Mile Park just North of downtown, and AuSable Shoreline Park by the marina. In the Oscoda Township: Destination Oscoda, MI area the Owl Health Extension of Alcona Health Center remains open even on snow days. Parents and Guardians are welcome to bring their child to the clinic even when school is closed. Call 989-569-6002 for hours and details.
