One of my favorite ways to understand a destination is wonderfully uncomplicated: snackpacking.

Begin at the neighborhood bakery. Notice what is piled high at the market. Try the food cart with the steady local line. Walk through a grocery store and see what families actually place in their baskets.

These are not replacements for a beautiful dinner reservation. They are the unscripted moments between reservations - and they often reveal how a place eats, gathers, celebrates, and lives.

A free afternoon is not wasted time.

It may be the only part of the trip when everyone gets exactly what they need.

A swim.
A nap.
A solo walk.
A quiet drink.
Room service.
Or absolutely no conversation at all.

For couples and multigenerational groups, unstructured time can be one of the most important parts of the itinerary because not everyone travels at the same pace.

A cooking lesson, pottery workshop, dance class, fragrance session, or time beside a local artist gives the day a different texture. You are not rushing past the culture. You are slowing down long enough to try, ask questions, make mistakes, and learn.
