The famous Colonial Spanish Mustangs, also known as Banker Horses, are believed to be descendants of horses that survived 16th-century Spanish shipwrecks. Today, they continue to roam freely along the beaches and dunes, creating a truly unforgettable sight.
📍 Where can you find them?
🐎 Corolla & Carova (accessible only by 4x4 vehicle)
Home to the largest herd, with approximately 110 wild horses roaming the northern beaches.
🏝️ Shackleford Banks
Another beautiful location where wild horses roam freely along the shoreline.
🐴 Ocracoke Island
Home to a smaller, managed herd of Banker horses.

🍂 September through October offers beautiful weather and fewer crowds, but wild horses can typically be seen from March through November.
