We were standing in the middle of a literal “Book Bank!” 🏦📚

Today’s trip to wasn’t just about books—it was about the mission. Most people don’t realize that thousands of kids live in “book deserts,” but BookSmiles is rewriting that story.

The Facts:
✅ 1.27 Million+ books distributed to kids in 2025.
✅ A $35/year membership that gives teachers unlimited access to books for their students.

Seeing The Novel Tourist Book Club get involved today reminded me that books are meant to be shared, not just stored on our own shelves. We’re so proud to support an organization like BookSmiles that makes literacy accessible to kids and affordable for the educators who need it most.

Walk Where History Was Written — W.E.B. Du Bois in Philly 📚✨

Did you know one of the most important early works of American sociology was written right here in Philadelphia? In 1896–97, W.E.B. Du Bois lived and worked in the city’s Seventh Ward, interviewing residents and mapping Black life for his groundbreaking study The Philadelphia Negro — the first sociological case study of a Black community in the U.S. 📊 This book challenged stereotypes and reshaped how we think about race, community, and inequality. 

📍 Today, you can visit the W.E.B. Du Bois historical marker at 6th & Rodman Streets (next to Starr Garden Playground) — marking the spot where Du Bois lived while doing this pivotal research. It’s a quiet piece of local history with a powerful story behind it. ✍️ 

Perfect for a Novel Touristy wander through Philly — walk the old Seventh Ward, reflect on how stories shape our cities, and dig into a text that connects sociology, history, and narrative craft. 💭🌆

What an incredible year 2025 has been for the Novel Tourists Book Club! 📚😃

Thank you to everyone who has joined me over the past 7 years - whether at an event, following along on social media, or simply sharing a love of books and exploring. Bringing books to life through real-world experiences—great conversations, laughter, new friendships, and memorable moments—has been so much fun - made better by your kindred presence!

And we’re just getting started…
2026 is shaping up to be something truly special. I have plans for even more thoughtful, immersive, and unforgettable book-inspired adventures ahead, including a few once-in-a-lifetime experiences both near and…far!
